Over the years some of the logs have developed horizontal cracks up to 3/8 inch in width. The cracks have been treated with a caulking but the appearance is unaccptable. We are looking for a material that can we applied with little effort and the finished surface will be flush with the existing log surface. We have been thinking of using a grout normally used for ceramic tiles and coloured with the same stain used on the logs.

Your opinions and experiences would be appreciated.

A grout will never cure properly because the logs will wick the moisture out of it as it sets. It will just crumble and fall out.

You should contact a paint store in your area to find a urethane sealant that can be color matched. If they don't carry anything like this they should be able to tell you who does.

Urethane will remain flexible for life and it will seal out the elements very well.

Grout will harden and not expand and contract with the logs. Use a caulking that is close to the color you want.
