Insects are a taxon of arthropods, there are a number of arthropod groups of which insects are only one (but a significant one at that). The word entomology comes from the greek work entomo "that which is cut in pieces or engraved/segmented", hence "insect." Their actual taxon is hexapoda, so the question should probably be why isn't the study of insects called hexapodology, to which I have no clue.

the general name is entomolgist. There are subdivisions based on the type of insect.
For example, a myrmecologist would study ants. See link for more names
