I started collecting porcelain dolls when I was a girl. I recently took them out of storage and some of them are having a bad hair day. Is there anyway I can fix their hair? Is there anyway I can prevent this from happening with my newer dolls?

It is very hard to fix the hair on dolls because you risk doing even more damage to it. Here is what I have done to my dolls:

If the hair is curly:

I would recommend you twirling the hair around your finger and holding it for a few minutes. If it still doesn't work, you can attempt to use curlers or a curling iron on it. Please note you should only use the curling iron on it for a few seconds because it will start to burn the hair if used any longer.

If the hair is straight;

I would recommend you first try using your finger to fix the stray hairs. If the hair is in worse condition, you can lightly use a soft brush or even a barbie brush to fix it.

Whatever you do, do NOT ever spray anything on the hair or shampoo the hair. This really damages the doll's hair.

Placing a hairnet over the hair is really the only way to keep the doll from having a bad hair day.

Once an American Girl dolls hair is broken, it will probably unfortunately now not be constant. I might pass directly to their internet website online, since this has occurred to me earlier than and you'll ship your doll in (For a rate although) to have them substitute the hair. Or in the event you should not have additional cash you'll alway reduce the ends off :) Hope I helped!

When the manufacturer ships a doll, they wrap a band of cellophane around the head to keep the hair from being pushed out of place. So if you're storing your dolls, you could save the band or make a new one from plastic wrap. Don't make it too tight or you'll dent the hair. Also keeping them in their original boxes helps.

If you bought them from a manufactor, check to see if they do head replacements. I know that the Pleasant Company does that for their American Girl Dolls. Also, if you had played with the hair as a child, that's mostly why the hair is a bit nappy.

Depending on what the hair is made of, I have found that fabric softener is actually very helpful for calming and smoothing hair down.
