"Number The Stars" by Lois Lowry was pretty good book if remember correctly and it's about The Holocaust. You could also read The Diary of Anne Frank.

Requiem for a Dream -- Hubert Selby, Jr.
The House of Sand and Fog -- Andre Dubus
Killings [short story] -- Dubus
The Gambler -- Dostoevsky
Laughter in the Dark -- Nabokov
The Demon -- Selby, Jr.
The Bell Jar -- Sylvia Plath
Night Falls Fast: Understanding Suicide -- Kay Redfield Jamison
That last one is the only non-fiction book, but it is extremely well written and terribly depressing (it contains many stories of people who committed suicide).

And I was going to say any Lurlene McDaniel books.....I used to love them.
Another good sad book would be Marley & Me.....it's funny but also very sad at several parts. Kite Runner is also sad.
I can't think of any more at the moment but the two I said are VERY good.
