if it's black and smells gas like it is just exhaust residue from the exhaust housing. remember when in the water the exhaust runs out underwater and you do not see this. This is normal. if you have black gear oil (rotten egg smell) thats another story. but this sounds normal. sometimes after storage all the exhaust residue drips down the inside of the exhaust housing and when you start it the first couple times it slowely runs out. the drain holes you call flange holes are drain holes so water doesnt get trapped in there and freeze in the winter. ps the advice about changing the water pump impeller is very sound do it approx every 2 years or after prolonged storage(rubber dries out and cracks) or if you run in brackish or dirty (weedy) water, replace yearly. good boating!!

Outboards have a hole that intentionally sprays out a small stream of water to indicate that the water pump is actually working. It is called the telltale or tattle tale. Worry when nothing comes out of this, it means a probable pump failure which is a fatal failure for an outboard. The presence of a little bit of oil is no big deal and quite normal. The cavity where the water travels is full when the engine is running and drains (gravity), when you no longer send water up to it. By the way, if you have the $ change the pump impeller every few years! the blades are rubber, they get rigid and crack!

smell it. gear lube has a natural gas smell to it, if it doesn't smell like that it's fuel/oil mix from the exhaust. the exhaust leakage, 2 ounces, means a needle/seat or two needs replacing probably. gear lube means a critical problem, the gas/oil is something with which you can live.

it is common. The gasoline line has to hold tension, in any different case the carb runs dry. lacking gasoline, the motor will cough, spit and shrink off, in basic terms such as you defined. hear close on the fittings for the wheezing sound of sucking air mutually as you pump the primer bulb. If that would not help, in basic terms replace the completed gasoline line with bulb and fittings. those issues positioned on out after awhile besides. although, you will desire to purchase a sparkling bulb and rapid-disconnect fittings to place in on the hose you have. The male fittings on the tank and motor will particularly plenty final perpetually. They for particular stay longer than a transportable gasoline tank, and the only on my 1979 classic motor is unique and nonetheless going. If the bulb nonetheless loses top, take the air silencer conceal off the front of the motor, till the motor finished up, pump up the primer bulb and save squeezing. do no longer attempt to burst it or something, in basic terms save on with some tension. in case you notice gasoline working out the carb throat, it skill your flow valve is wiped out or misadjusted. in any different case, start up changing the gasoline lines on the motor (setting up to pump, pump to carb). someplace in there is an air leak, it incredibly is in basic terms a remember of time till you stumble on it.
