I see college educated people who can't spell, who can't write, who have no comprehension...what the heck?

Elo27 - "There not stupid they are ignorant. "
It should have been, "they're not stupid they are ignorant" .
However this is a common typo mistake, I find that I make way more grammar and word errors in typing than I would in written work.

Of course, then there's "txt speek lol" which is just silly on a computer. On mobile phones it's perfectly acceptable because that costs. However, what I am typing now is in the cost of a monthly internet connection. In fact, the longer it takes me to type the more I'm getting for that monthly payment.

I think it's just the current culture, it's the whole "mobile phone" generation and the technical generation.

I think that's a very negative and blinkered view. There are lots of people out there who are far more skilled than you or I, who are unable to read or write. College ( and lets face it most college learning is all basic level anyway) does not make a person educated. It can make them semi skilled. Ignorance and education are not comparable. My son has ADHD and was deemed to be stupid while at school because they didn't understand his problems. He is not stupid. He failed all but one of his exams at school, because of his reading & writing skills. He has a superb memory capacity and he is an intelligent and articulate young man. He is also a very skilled negotiator at work. If his exams had all been oral instead of written, he would have got A star in all subjects. Those words came from his head teacher.

I'd say the main cause of this phenomenon is that all colleges are not of equal merit.

It is also true that some people have the type of smarts needed for college, but don't have much of a natural gift for grammar and spelling. Yes, they graduated, but that doesn't tell you what kind of grades they got. Poor grammar and spelling may lower a student's grades, but, except in English or other language classes, won't keep him or her from passing.

By the way, you left a hyphen out. ; )

Some people are just plain ignorant and then there are people who are literally stupid and then of course there are the smart people. Trust me Rhode Island has the highest amount of Stupid and Ignorant people I have ever seen in all the states I have visited. Luckily for me I have visted or lived in almost every state with the exception of a handful and Rhode Islanders are the most ignorant and stupid people I have ever seen or met just by the sheer fact that they don't think things out they assume and as the cliche goes "If you ASSUME it makes an A$$ out of U and Me" and most Rhode Islanders have that mentality so to answer your question yes some people are stupid.

People spend so much time on the computer using letters to represent words or phrases, but I think the main reason people cannot spell is because spell check enables them to continue being idiots and not look it up.

Sometimes it can be a typo, but in general, yes, I agree with you. People are coming out of high schools and colleges and they cannot read, write, comprehend, nor speak eloquently. I had a college grad fill out a form in my office, and when I corrected something on the form - he said "my bad". I was really upset and lectured him as if I were his mother.

I know what you mean!
I saw on here yesterday someone who said they have an English Masters, and in the same sentence they misspelled a word!
It's nuts - you'd think that they won't need the spell check if they pride themselves in their education!

It's not your imagination, I get very frustrated seeing simple words spelled incorrectly.

I think part of it is people are in a hurry, coupled with using Internet "lingo" and the other part of it just laziness.

It's not your imagination - people are super stupid. It is very hard to even talk to someone nowadays unless it is about tv. I think I was born in the wrong era, because I actually read novels. Its amazing, people think that I am crazy because I read.

It's because they are narrow minded. They are so intelligent in one thing and that one thing has been their focus from the get go. Their concentration was keen on that one subject of learning that they haven't had the chance to smell the roses or the coffee. It gets better in the long run.
