The caveat Al Maliki added is a big one! The US withdrawal from this region will not be as rapid as the final withdrawal from Korea or Vietnam. The reason: BLACK GOLD. If we leave, oil prices could easily double or worse within the span of a few months. That's why the Democrats have not been furiously banging the table demanding for an end to the war despite having control of Congress. They don't want to be labeled as the party that had a hand in destabilizing the Middle East (and oil prices). They want to leave everything to the Republicans to screw up, so that a Democrat will essentially walk into the White House come the next election.

I stated in an answer a while ago that even if the Iraqi Government" asked us to leave",the present Administration would not, they'd find a way to reinvent cut and run, defeat, lost war, second place, loser, or some other egotistical phrase that would not allow it,even though, their most often used definition of SUCCESS, is "when the new Iraqi Government ,can maintain security for the Iraqi citizens"....Let's see what happens, and more importantly, when, how, and why !For an administration that appeared to have no idea of how to leave, this would seem like a golden opportunity to grasp the moment and not cut and run, but simply, pack and leave, don't ya think ? Get out your pens and paper, it's time to make some congressional demands !!

Iraq still needs out troops. I don't agree with the war, but to pull out troops all at once is just plain stupid. You need to withdraw slowly to gradually let Iraqi security forces take over. The complete withdrawal won't happen until at least 2009, when a Democrat possibly could win, but if a Republican wins, it might be longer. Bush will veto any bill that calls for a troop withdrawal and he will veto the bill passed in Congress the other day, which calls for a complete troop withdrawal in 120 days.

we decide for those bases. We stored bases in Germany because of the chilly conflict. They nevertheless function a sturdy staging section, to boot as great medical supply up for our injured troops. The troops in Japan and Korea are there because of the fact of N.Korea and China. they could be very susceptible if we left. the financial impression on those areas could be catastrophic if we close down and got here abode. eu, The U.N and different international locations shop calling for the united statesto deliver troops for this or that, look at Bosnia. If we picked up our toys and got here abode, who might do the grimy artwork. Who might help preserve U.N coverage or stabalize a area. If the Germans or British, Swedes can do it, why are we talked approximately as upon?

You beat me to it ;). I was curious to thoughts on this as well. I think, (regardless of political affiliations), Americans need to pay close attention to how Bush & CO. handle this. It is telling (to me) that the Iraqi officials want our military help. However, not so much our brand of government.

Sounds good to me. But I'm waiting to see the next news release where Maliki clarifies what he meant to say.

Jee whiz - didn't Bush say he'd bring the troops home if the Iraqi government said they didn't want them anymore?
How much will you bet it was another lie?

Let's get out then. Why wait until September? We can leave now and watch them kill themselves. Fine by me.
