I've had motorcycles with pull back bars, t-bars, and now one with mini-apes (about 12"). I like the mini-apes and find them comfortable, and I do a lot of long rides. I do not think I would want to go to an 18" bar though, I would think my hands would go numb, which was what I didn't like about the t-bars.

Depends on what you mean by "comfortable." If your hands are above your shoulders you're going to have reduced blood flow to your hands and your arms will eventually go numb. If you're riding short distances it shouldn't really matter, go for it.

If you're planning on going on longer rides apes could be a mistake. Try out various bars and try to find something that gives you the look you want while keeping your hands below shoulder height.

mine has half apes. Long trips it's OK, but for quick runs i'd prefer drag bars. The thought is that blood flow is better if your hands are above you're heart. and it will also help in the distribution of vibration. I took it a step further and put BB's in the handle bars to help further with distribution of the vibration. Sounds crazy, but I think it makes a difference.

They are not nearly as precarious as they appear,I was surprised . They are reasonably comfortable and the bike is still manageable.
Apes are not for me though, my fingers sometimes get numb on long rides with my flat track bars, I've heard apes cause this even more.

yes and no. On my wide glide I had apes with 16 inch rise and they felt great, on my dyna wide glide I had drop to 12 risers and on my new ultra I'm going with 16's again. But that's because some bikes have low bars to start. The ultra's bars are lower stock, than any of my other harley's. You want the bars to present so that your hands are right at shoulder level when sitting normally. I don't recomend the bars that present your hands higher than the shoulder. They are illegal for one, uncomfortable for another, and cause all the blood to leave your arms which ache and "go to sleep".

Myself, I prefer drag bars. That said, some people I know claim it's more comfortable on ling rides. My hands start to fall asleep, though. But it keeps the arm pits ventilated!

I didn't care for them. Seems my arms went to sleep with them. I have friends that swear by them though so it is a personal preference. Check your local height laws though. 15" above the seat seems to be a standard. Florida cops will depress the seat while measuring so give it a little leeway.
