The details depend on which school of thought you follow: Marxist-Leninist, Marxist, Leninist, Maoist, Anarchist, Stalinist, etc.

Ideally, a Utopian world (although some schools of thought are very critical of the Utopian idea). That a share and share alike, classless, stateless, etc society would work. The problem is that Utopia is a fictional concept and at odds with human nature. It may work if everyone is lobotomized. Even if you don't go all in for the Ideal Utopian situation, history has shown that communism has some really big flaws. Not saying every thing's all good with capitalism. Both need checks & balances. Perfection is a goal, not a destination.

Unfortunately, power corrupts; greed seems to be an innate human trait. While the "common people" may be forced into equality; sh** floats to the top and so does the money & lifestyle that goes with it.

While I don't think they're completely right, I'm a big believer that a fiction author can create a world based on "what if" that can show us the consequences of our actions before we have to live with them. Here's some titles that deal with a failed Utopian Ideal:
Brave New World - Huxley
1984 - Orwell
Fahrenheit 451 - Bradbury
The Sword of Truth - Goodkind (look at the society of The Order)
The Sleepless Universe (aka Beggars Trilogy) - Kress
Gattaca - Movie, Ethan Hawk & Jude Law

No one owns anything, everybody shares.
Redisribution of wealth so all are equal.
You are predestined to your career based on what is need in the community.

It sounds like utopia but never works because man is corrupt. It will fail like USSR.
