Anti-war group targets on-campus military recruiters

"A mob of Seattle Central Community College students chased military recruiters off campus last month, after a tense confrontation.

The students hurled insults and water bottles, according to witnesses, forcing the recruiters to flee under the protection of campus security officers."

I can't imagine any adult acting in such a childish manner. I have lived in Seattle before so I can well believe it. I know how people are there. Those students may have just been out of pot and became grumpy. If they had some pot to smoke it may all have been avoidable.

I am ex military and I always maintain the highest respect for those who serve America and the American people.

Yes, I can imagine; I've seen them. The target was different, and it was more violent. Conservatives protested the play "Angels in America" on my campus.

1) Violence by either side is not the solution - remember Ohio State? When we resort to violence against our own, we become no better than those we are "liberating". Hypocrisy at best.

2) What in the world are Recruiters still doing on High School and College Campuses?!? When I was in HS (10 years ago), the Recruiters were beyond pushy ("not interested" didn't work) and flat out lied about service contracts. I hope it is a little more regulated, but since this is a time where they actually need recruits I doubt it has changed any. I'm from an military family and I know what it's about, and the recruiters weren't telling the whole story. How much money you'll get was a pretty lengthy topic. They typically target areas of low income and poor education (some of these kids may not even be able to read/comprehend what they're signing). When I moved to college and experienced the religious recruiters; they were no match for the military recruiters.

3) The Seattle-Tacoma area has a rather large military presence (Bremerton, Ft Lewis, McChord, etc). If somebody wants to sign up, they can find a recruiting office within a mile of where they live. According to the TV, you can even just call or visit a website for more info.

Yes, just put a gay rights recruiter on campus at a conservative college. That is one answer to your question. The other is I think the anti war students are stupid. You can be against the war but do not disrespect the troops by acting like idiots.

Shucks, no. Most universities have diversity policies that say if you discriminate against people based on suspect classifications (race, creed, color, national origin, sexual oritentation) you may not use our institution to recruit. However, the US Supreme Court says we have to let the miltary recruit. Nonetheless, the US Supreme Court never said we had to muzzle our students.

I am not a liberal (thank God) but I think this type of behavior does NOT embarrass them. It seems to me that many (not all) libs will stick up for their comrades no matter what they do. If they disagree, they won't say anything. At least, generally speaking, conservatives will not condone these types of outbursts even from those of their own party. I'm sure most of us abhor the bombing of the abortion clinic etc.

Well conservative students wouldn't act like that because they understand what free speech is..It's always the liberal students, or FOREIGNERS, that act that way towards others who they don't agree with.

But note how Liberals are just fine with a Lib clan going to a Colorado High School assembly and telling the students there that it is OK to use as many drugs as you want and to have as much sex as you want..

Liberals are tough though..It takes over 100 of them to gang up on 2 recruiters!

Anti-war group targets on-campus military recruiters


Look at the date.
Although I don't condone this type of behaviour, two questions beg to be asked:
1. What are military recruiters doing on a college campus? If young people really want to enlist, they will.
2. This might sound frivolous, but needs to be asked, given the past (and present) chaotic situation in Iraq. How many young lives might have been saved through their actions?

I am sure they would not have acted in this way if this ill-conceived 'war' hadn't been going on.
