You can't do this with all email servers. it depends. The person above me suggested Y! email and its messenger. And that does work pretty good for notification. But the closest thing you'll get to what you're looking for is a program called ePrompter, and after setting up your "accounts" so it knows which servers to check for email on, you can set it to check from every minute to every 12 hours.

And having something check for your email every minute isn't that bad, is it? The only downside to that is that it's going to want to use your network resources every minute, so you may notice a drop in performance when your downloading a file, or watching a streaming video or something, when it updates.

It depends on the email product you are using. As stated above, most messenger products can notify you immediately. Outlook and Outlook Express also have settings to notify you when mail arrives. If you can specify which product you are asking about a solution could be made available to you.

Depends on what email you're talking about. Yahoo, Msn, myspace have that in their instant messenger clients. Best bet is that if your email service also has a messenger client then you can get mail alerts that way. Also if your ISP lets you use Microsoft outlook or outlook express to get your mail then you can get alerts.
