i had an engine wash and sadly i think they got my alternator wet, they forgot to cover it up.. now it's kinda noisy, now i'm wondering, can i actually spray wd40 inside the alternator where the water got in? coz alternators do have gaps where you can see the copper thingy, and thats where the water got in, do you guys think it's alright if i spray wd40 inside it?

The propellant in WD-40 is propane which can easily ignite and cause a flash fire.Never spray it on something that sparks.Once the propane has dissipated the lubricant remains that will probably be ok in that alternator but I doubt if it will cure anything.

Inside An Alternator

No. Not oil. WD40 is an oil. Those air holes are there to allow air to flow thru to aid in cooling.
And being that the altenator is in the engine compartment.....how dry do you think it is inside the engine compartment when you drive in the rain? Not completely, so that means the alt. would get wet.
Just a coincidence, but maybe the altenator bearing is going. Take to a shop that does electrical and have them check it(while still in car). Only takes them a minute.

Go on a spray away. Why not soak it in a 5 gallon bucket of 40 weight olive oil and then put it back on the engine then let it get hot when the engine runs for 20 minutes, then it will be ready to serve and eat. It feeds a party of five.

People WD-40 is not a fix all juice.

It will destroy your alternator, and probably catch on fire also.

Quit suggesting it for everything, it was designed for bicycles and hinges and such. Not to remove things from your paint (it destroys the clearcoat)

Your best bet is to let mother nature dry it out (shouldn't take very long. Or buy another alternator.

water will not hurt it will dry out in time . wd40 will cause the brushes inside to start to fall apart and gum up everything. It`s a possibility getting water in was a good thing it might be showing you the bearings are not sealed any more and it might go. Time will tell

NO! wd-40 is not a lubricant! It will collect duct and cause more problems. You need heavy duty grease, like bearing grease or marine grade grease.Put very little on the copper part and start it up to let it warm up and spread by itself. You may need to take a screwdriver and move the fins back and forth to grease it better.

Well, you could. It wouldn't hurt and might help. But why would you be stuck fixing someone elses mistake? I think I'd go back to where you had the engine wash done and ask them for advice and/or request they fix their mistake, and see what, if anything, they are willing to do.

SPRAYING WD-40 ON THE ALTERNATOR IS JUST LIKE PUTTING GAS ON A FIRE, YOU WILL SURELY GET BURNED BUT IN YOUR CASE YOU WILL SURELY BURN OUT THE ALTERNATOR.
