Who joins the US army and why?

Who joins? Alot of people. People who have nothing and are seeking a better life, they think the army can give it to them. People who feel their life needs direction often join the army hoping it will straighten them out and give them the structure they never got in childhood. Some people join the army to get a college education. Some people join the army because they come from the poorest parts of this country and thats just what people do there unless they want to live in abject poverty. Some people though join the military because they genuinely feel that is the best way to serve the country they love so dearly. They are mistaken though.

Some join the Army or other branch of the military because they feel a deep sense of duty toward their nation and protecting the freedom so many have fought and died for.
Others join the military because they are lost, don't know what they want to do with their lives and are searching for a meaningful purpose.
Some join the military for job security and to take advantage of the many opportunities to further their education.
And some join the military before they have any idea of what they are committing themselves too: Just months before troops were deployed to Afghanistan I was standing in line at Walgreen’s when I heard this exchange between 2 young women.
"You joined the Army, Cool"!?
"Yeah, it's cool"
"What if you have to fight and stuff, I'd be scared!"
"I’m just going to get my degree and I'll leave if they try and make me go anywhere.
"Cool."

Let's hope she didn't get past bootcamp.

Maybe you should read the book "The Four Feathers" by A. E. W. Mason. Young American men might feel pressured into joining otherwise they are accused of cowardice.
