Computer "Viruses" act in several ways. They may corrupt a known file, replace it and even delete it. They are called "virus" since they can reproduce themselves in your filesystem and also infect other filesystems.
In general i think you can say that viruses leave traces in the files they have attacked, something like a signature.
These traces might be known exactly or just be of a common type. The antivirus software scans your filesystem looking for these traces and letting you know if and where they were found.

I have got an antivirus program NOD 32 , it works here good. The clue is in the question itself.

It tricks you into thinking you are protected form viruses... :P

Baiscally, it finds viruses on your system and removes them.

........ basically with you antvirus updated regularly .... it can identify the virus and other malicious softwares... reduces threat of such known virus attacking your system .....
