Both are important but here is an easier way to think about it:

The processor determines the maximum speed of the computer (kind of like an engine in a car determining how fast it can go).

The RAM allows the computer to get to that speed. If you have too little the computer will not be able to work at its full capacity, if you have enough it will. (using the car analogy, a car with big engine but only 3 tires can't go at full speed. But 5 tires won't make it faster than 4)

If I had to choose between a faster processor and an extra 1GB of RAM it would be a tough choice.

IF the computer is running Windows XP I would go with the faster processor because XP doesn't really get much (or any) boost after 1GB.

If the computer was running VISTA it would be a tough call. 2GB of RAM will help the computer run faster for NOW so would be the better choice if you are never going to open it up again.

BUT the faster processor and 1GB of RAM would work okay for now and adding an extra 1GB of RAM later would really help it fly. Adding the extra 1GB of RAM on a modern machine only costs about $50 and is very easy to do

Getting the 2GB of ram now and updating the processor later is expensive and more difficult so if you are ever thinking of upgrading get the faster processor.

If it is a FREE upgrade take the processor, buy extra ram latter it is by far the cheaper of the two options.

Consisdier this:

Have you installed a processor in a laptop? It is not an easy task. Let the manufacture techs do the job, if they break the case they will replace it. If you breask the case you have to replace it.

To install additional/new ram is easy, most laptops have a small panel that you open, insert the ram, the close the panel.

Done. No chance of damage.

Hope this help....

i would suggest that since u already have the option of upgrading the processor as well as the ram install the core2duo t7600 as i already have a sony vaio laptop but at the same time if you are using Vista operating system then, since it runs on high end graphic files it would use up ur memory a lot and also some extra procesess would be running so upgrade ur ram to 2gb so that Vista functions smoothly on it..and you should have no problems then....

ok so we could anticipate you like the quickest gadget to your funds. if so the common of all your components could desire to be equivalent. case in point, in case you have perfect of the line each and every thing and a slow complicated force, the complicated force will bottleneck your computer and you wont have the capacity to do issues as rapid as you have got cherished. case in point, assuming you play video games, those video games will take an prolonged time to load, even even with the shown fact that they are going to look perfect. If each and every thing is wisely of the line different than RAM or Processor, then your total gadget would be slow, those quite are the significant components. in case you interest, then the video card is likewise thrown in as a key element. evaluate it this way: Processor: your significant processing gadget. each and every thing revolves around this. RAM: helps your processor. the quicker your processor, the quicker your RAM could desire to be. additionally, in case you propose on having diverse courses open on the comparable time, you'll want extra RAM. besides the undeniable fact that, 4 gigs of ram vs 8 will make no distinction for many consumers. speed does not remember the two except you have a processor which could use that speed. complicated force: you're in seek of for means in case you be responsive to you have got a super sort of documents. in any different case extra durable drives are the comparable so some distance as speed except you get a 10k RPM force. those will fee you lots extra, yet courses will open rather rapidly. additionally look into RAID 0, which utilises 2 complicated drives for optimum overall performance. basically make certain you back up all your documents in many situations. fairly, you processor is the main severe, yet without a solid gadget to homestead the processor, you will no longer have the capacity to take great thing approximately its complete speed.

These days all processors are super fast, if you are on a budget, go for more RAM, modern applications use a lot of RAM, you could also get the fast processor and get a computer that will allow you to increase the RAM later on.
But the basic principle is this, you cant have too much RAM.

Another vote for RAM. If you end up with any application that takes that much processing power you'll need the RAM. Sortof a redundant issue you've got going there.

Depends on what you are planning to do.
I think that RAM in this case is what I would put first unless you plan to use your laptop for gaming where CPU seems more important.
If you plan using it for software development, text or image processing then go for 2gb
