Our brain controls every part of us. Our brain even controls our likes and dislikes, as well as our emotions (in the amygdala), so we couldn't have a separately existing soul.
When we are dead, our brain is dead. Or, we are dead BECAUSE our brain is dead. But whatever, when we are dead, we no longer have the connections in our brains, and we no longer have consciousness. Without consciousness we don't know we exist. And when we are dead, we don't exist. So there is absolutely nothing. Death doesn't include a luxurious heaven, or even a blackness. It is nothing. (And that is why I am so afraid of it. I like who and what I am now. How could anyone want -or even imagine- a lack of self, a lack of consciousness.)

-----I would certainly like to believe in Heaven, but it is just not rational. Where is the proof? The Bible was created by MEN, not God a long time ago. They had fantasies; they wanted to believe in something and reassure themselves.
-----People who were dead for about a minute and brought back to life with the shocker machines and tell stories about how they saw Heaven are not necessarily correct. Scientists say that after a person dies, the brain is still active for a short while, and hallucinates, sort of like a dream.
-----I know a few people who believe they have had past lives and know about them. But they could just be hunches, interests, or delusions. What is there to prove them real besides a slight feeling?

We can't know for sure, although there are many people who have 'died' during an operation. They all say the same thing. They travel towards a bright light. It draws them forward with love and happiness. They really want to stay, but someone tells them it's not their time and they must go back. From then on they are different people, changed in some way, and appreciating every moment they are with us.
I believe we are all spirits, who have been created with free will. Some of the choices we made in past lives (learning experiences) affect our looks and our motivation.
While we are here, we need to make all our choices the right ones, because each one ensures a lesson learned or not. If we don't learn what we're here for, we will have to do it again until we do.
I believe our spirit will live for eternity, and progress until we become a star/

Depending on what you want to believe, you have a few options.

Reincarnation, some believe you randomly reincarnate into something different each lifetime. Some believe you're always human. The Hindus believe each reincarnation is to help reach Nirvana, ultimate enlightenment.

Utopia, most fundamental religions have some sort of "heaven". You don't get to live again on earth, but in a much better, utopian place, which would be the ultimate goal in life.

Atheism, the belief there just isn't anything there. When you die, that's it, you're dead, game over.

In short, no one really knows will absolute certainly, we believe in the philosophy that best suits us and allows us to live our lives to the fullest. :)

The act of living is like burning of a candle; the candle generates light but the light cannot then be replaced back into the candle, even though it has no knowledge of its destination, and even thought it has just on origin for its being that raised it into being. And when the candle is all turned into life it is no more but light in another world along paths unknown, unheard of, and unseen before.

The act of living generate realities in existence: the hell, the heaven the life after life all come into being right now here and when are life is live entirely all is gone what was all before; no candle is left that once generated light.

Well, the problem with any answer is who to believe and why?

As a Christian, I accept the Holy Scriptures as the authority since God would know.

The answer is, the soul refers to entire being, human or animal, or to the life it enjoys. Thus on death the soul dies.

The dead are unconscious, and many will remain so for all eternity without suffering. Many others will be resurrected.

It is not only you who is worried about "what happens after we die". Like you said no one comes to tell you where he/she is. Don't keep thinking about whether is there a real hell/heaven. Don't put your self in hell before you die. Make your life a heaven by loving each and every living thing. You shouldn't have a single enemy left on this planet. I think this is what should be happening in heaven, you are always happy, everybody, every situation and everything gives you only joy. So whatever comes your way from anybody, any situation and thing, take it happily. Don't hurt anyone (not even animals). Everybody and including animals have right to live. So, you let everybody live and they will let you live happily. BE HAPPY.

Our spirit lives on and come back in another body. I know because i feel i had a former life. my soul is older than me. i hear things and know i heard them long ago, (no, not deja vu) and i miss the 18 century, like i have been there or i should have been there.
