Half-duplex uses both pairs, the same as full-duplex does. It just cannot send and receive at the same time, that's all.

Half Duplex Ethernet Wiring

In half duplex you usually do not send and recieve simultaneously.

The following applies for 10 and 100 Mbps transmissions:

Using standard Ethernet protocol, pins 1 and 2 are for send, 3 and 6 are for receive. Wire color is not the way to identify the pins because there are 2 ethernet wire substandards, a and b and in A, the pins 1 and 2 are green white and green and pins 3 and 6 are orange white and orange and this is exactly reversed in the B substandard.

Regardless of whether you use full or half duplex or 10,100, or 1000 Mbps always wire properly for the use of all 4 CAT5 pairs. Some day you will upgrade to a faste speed and need them.

For 1000 Mbps, or GB transmissions, all wires are used.

I guess the Pins 1 & 2 are the communicating wires in Half Duplex. Of course this can be checked by simply setting the Network Interface Card to Half Duplex (from Control Panel/ Network Connections/ Local Area Connection/ Properties/ Configure/ Advanced/ Link Speed/ Duplex Mode) and disconnecting pins 3 & 6 and checking if your PC is connected to the LAN. Make sure that the two check boxes at the bottom of Local Area Connection/ Properties are ticked.
