let me give u my view.the indian bakthi movement can be divide d into two timelines. one after the muslim invasions after 10th centurya.d.and the other during the jaina and boudha influences.before 10thcentury a.d.as a whole the bhakti movement is always a ressurecting effort of the hindu faith through arts.as it is under capture by the ruler suppressed and weak the only show of strenght can be throught literature, poetry, art , drama and dance.simmilarly the indian women in apatriach society were always suppresed and never even considered worth of exporesing themselves. so when they saw an oppurtunity where they can expres themselves as wellas be on par with the male without really confronting the social system they thought this was the best posible way to achieve it. that is why meera, jansi, bommi, mangama, all used bakti as a tool for expresion aswell as recognition.the fact is it ofers the indian women equal status and recognition without a strugle as well as lending them divine outlook.ned more info do mail

Although highly complicated...in short, the very ancient origins of what was later called the 'Bhakti Movement' believed that the pressure of the caste system and other beliefs could be cast aside. Also, one of the most revered of their 'saints', was a woman, Karaikkal Amaiyar, who lived aprox. late 5th or early 6th C. CE [AD].
It was/is a very poetic belief, which includes women as equals.

"A number of research studies have shown that such spiritual and devotional practices as those associated with bhakti yoga have positive effects on physical as well as emotional health. The positive physical effects include strengthening of the immune system, lowered blood pressure, and improved ability to cope with chronic pain. Chanting or hymn singing (kirtana) has been shown to be particularly effective in pain management.

Several research studies published in early 2004 report that all forms of yoga are becoming increasingly popular among Americans over 40—particularly women and people living in urban areas—for general wellness as well as back pain or other specific health problems. At least 15 million adults in the United States have participated in yoga programs, according to a study conducted at Harvard Medical School. Ninety percent of those contacted by telephone in a research sample said that they found yoga very or somewhat helpful. A survey of cancer patients in a supportive care program at Stanford University found that yoga and massage therapy were the activities that drew the largest number of participants."

"The Bhakti Movement introduced the concept of communal harmony in India. It spawned into several different movements across North and South India. In North India, the movement was not different from a Sufi movement of the Muslims of Chisti fame. People of Muslim faith adopted it as Sufism, Hindus as Vaisanava Bhakti. The Sufi saints of Chisti order produced Baba Sheikh Farid Shakarganj, the first Punjabi Sufi saint who paved the way for Punjabi nationalism and promoted peace between Hindus and Muslims.

Even though there are many examples of communal harmony in the subcontinent, the deep-rooted centuries-old Hindu-Muslim hatred is emphasised and taken as a natural phenomenon. These interpretations form the basis of Indo-Pak rift but they are woefully inadequate and misguiding.

The picture of the inter-communal conflict in India and Pakistan is more complicated than its populist depiction. Unfortunately, simplifications can be politically influential, playing to the vested interests of the ruling few. The media and state governments -- to promote harmony -- will have to shift their attention from finding the roots of hatred to those of love, which are, in fact, far stronger than hatred.
The role of Bhakti Movement (800-1700) was integral in weaving the thread of communal harmony. The movement had far-reaching effects and is responsible for many rites and rituals associated with the worship of God by Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs of the Indian subcontinent. For example, Kirtan at a Hindu temple, Qawwali at a Muslim Dargah (shrine), and singing of Gurbani at a Gurdwara (Sikh temple) are all derived from the Bhakti Movement. The Bhagats, like Kabir mirror the spiritual movement that relentlessly fought against simple-minded Hindu and Muslim ritualism, die-hard fanaticism, and religious, sectarian, class, and colour distinctions. Another important feature of the movement was the spiritual emancipation and enfranchisement of women."
