Grateful Jerry, I dig haunting songs too. Well at least there are some new ones there for me to look up.

i am only familiar with Moonchild ... but i dont find it to be too haunting. ill have to check out the other ones.
my suggestions include

Radiohead - "Kid A" "Idioteque" "Morning Bell" "Pyramid Song" "Where I end and you begin" "Climbing up the walls"<-definitely
Blackfield - "1000 People"
Muse - Hyper Chondriac Music"
Fantomas - "Rosemary's baby" "Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer" "Der Golem" (and their whole album "Delerium Cordia" which is described as the musical equivalent of a complicated surgery from the patient's point of view)
Brian Eno - i think it's called " 'There is nobody' "but it might be another song of his I am thinking of
Team Sleep - "Kool-Aid Party" is actually quite haunting

Well, I can't pick just four. The Grateful Dead had more than one or two(IE Days Between, Stella Blue and so on). I do think Moonchild is but so are a lot of King Crimson songs for me. Listen to the In The Wake Of Poseidon song and that's just one example. How about some of those Moody Blues albums which drip haunting songs like Are You Sitting Comfortably?, Have You Heard?, My Song and so on. Traffic songs like No Face No Name No Number, No Time To Live, Glad/ Freedom Rider and so on.They're many other haunting songs by great artists so you can see my problem.

Ghosts by Japan is one very haunting song. I find Sons Of Pioneers to be even more haunting, with its relentless slow beat, the snakey bass playing, and howling synth sounds.
Matte Kudasai is just downright beautiful in my opinion.
I never heard the other 3 songs, but I'll certainly check them out since my curiosity has been aroused.
Also, 'Europe After The Rain' and 'The Garden', by John Foxx
'I Am Stretched On Your Grave' by Dead Can Dance are among my most favorite haunting songs.
And I almost forgot - Song To The Siren by This Mortal Coil.

The most haunting songs for me are songs by Radiohead. Fitter Happier, Climbing Up The Walls, some of Radiohead's later stuff, particularly off Hail To The Theif.

Danzig - sistinas
nirvana - where did you sleep last night
Frank Zappa - Peaches en regalia (I think its uplifting at parts but you can definately sense a sort of melancholy feeling in parts that are quite haunting)
Danzig - going down to die

These are probably my most mixed haunting songs. Rather than go for some obvious ones.

With the exception of Squirelboy, I don't think any of these people so far have an inkling of what you're talking about with "haunting song". I agree with your list but it should include "God Shuffled His Feet" by Crash Test Dummies and "One" by Metallica.

DOA Bloodstone

Laying here looking at the ceiling
Someone lays a sheet across my chest
Something warm is flowing down my fingers
Pain is flowing all through my back

I try to move my arms and there's no feeling
And when I look I see there's nothing there
The face beside me stopped it totally bleeding
The girl I knew has such a distant stare

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Then I looked straight at the attendant
His face is pale as it can be
He bends and whispers something softly
He says there's no chance for me

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

Life is flowing out my body
Pain is flowing out with my blood
The sheets are red and moist where I'm lying
God in Heaven, teach me how to die

I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
