SQL Server 2005 all editions will work.
I have personally installed SQL Server Enterprise version on my DELL Inspiron 9300 and it works great :)

You cannot install the full version of SQL server on XP. Only the MSDE or Personal Edition (both free, by the way) can be installed on a client OS like XP.
