Jimmy Wales wanted to created an open-source encyclopedia which is free. That is actually the main purpose of Wikipedia's creation.

WikiBooks (http://en.wikibooks.org/) is where MediaWiki
gets its money from. Wikipedia was not created by
MediaWiki, the software was made by WikiMedia
and the data was produced by its community,
a one page or more community website
rolled into itself as a free host. Which
then became the worlds best source
of information in my opinion, I
sometimes research for
Yahoo! Answers from it.

Note: Wikiversity and some information from
WikiBooks is free, the rest of the money for
MediaWiki and WikiMedia software team
is by donations, people love Wikipedia
so they do send donations to it now
and then. Wiki means editable
by community free open
source code website,
a web site or set of
web pages that
allows almost anyone
to edit and add content.

You can save info as long as you read it only and do not use it in ways that would break copywright rules. Wikipedia is a non profit organization but accepts donations.
