I'm confused about what the cup winner's cup is? European cup winner's cup. UEFA champion league. European Cup. FA Cup, etc. Please give me some clarification.

The Cup Winners Cup no longer exists.

It was the third UEFA European club competition, alongside the European Cup ( which is now the Champions League) and the UEFA Cup. It was generally considered to be less important than the European Cup, but more important than the UEFA Cup

In order to qualify for it , a club had to win their own nation's major knock -out Cup competition (so in England, the winners of the FA Cup would qualify for the Cup Winners Cup the following season)

In the late 1990s, with the further expansion of the Champions League to include as many as three or four teams from the top footballing nations, a continuation of the Cup Winners Cup essentially became impossible due to the potential lack of teams available to take part from many European countries, and UEFA took the decision to end the competition

It was last held in the 1998-99 season, the winners were Lazio of Italy.

As far as I am aware the Cup winners cup is now a apart of the UEFA cup. In this country the team that wins the FA Cup but finishes outside the top 4 of the Premiership goes into the UEFA cup. If they finish in the top 4 the runner-up goes in instead. If they both finish in the top 4 then an extra place is made available for the teams finishing 5th-8th instead of 5th-7th. The winner of the Carling Cup (or whatever they want to call it this year) also go into the UEFA Cup but if again they finish in the top 4 of the premiership they can't be entered as they are in the in the Champions league which I think opens up another place for finishing further down the league. Now if you get knocked out of the Champions league in the early stages you enter the UEFA Cup in the later rounds this is why there is about 50 games for team in the early stages to play to get to the final....but I could be wrong!!!..... Confused, I certainly am!!!

the european cup winners cup is a defunct club competition, lazio won the last ever trophy in 1999. teams from all over europe who won their domestic cup (FA cup) all competed.

the champions league is europes biggest competition, the winners of each european league and more often than not the runners up and 3rd placed team all qualify for a place. england, italy and spain get 4 places in the champions league.

FA Cup - Cup involving every English (some welsh teams) and is the oldest domestic cup in the world. one of the best to win domestically behind the premiership

Champions League- The best teams from around Europe enter this as the won it the year before, or won or came 2nd in the league etc the year before. the bigger the league the more teams they have enter eg England 3 teams and Germany 2 etc. This is run in a group format for the 1st round then goes to a knockout tournament over 2 legs for the later stages

UEFA Cup- This is a straight knockout tournament over 2 legs with the other clubs form Europe that didn't make the champions league (not as prestigious as the Champions league)

In order of importance:
Champions league: cup competition amongst the top teams from europe, top 4 teams from England, Spain, Italy etc.

UEFA cup: european competition for lower down teams, usually winners of national cup competitions like FA cup and the teams placed 5th/ 6th in league

Cup winners cup: no longer exists but was a competition played between winners of national cup competitions

FA cup: This is national trophy just played amongst english teams including all from 4 professional leagues and other non-league teams that qualify

League Cup (Carling cup): Smaller version of FA cup only played amongst teams from 4 professional leagues and not as highly respected

There used to be a trophy called the European cup winners cup, but basically it's been replaced by the Europa cup.

I agree it sounds confusing, but I'd have thought a cup winner's cup is a cup won by winners.
