I don't know about stealing them, but they might eat them!

Ya know, my father has a fish pond on his property that is (was!) stocked with small mouth bass and he has lost many and most of them to the Herons...I would not doubt it at all if the Heron's are hip to the urban pond scene!

Yes they steal and eat them I have a small garden pond and I only put gold fish in it because of this. Koi are to expensive to buy as bird food.

Herons or cranes get hungry too, so they take their food where they find it, nice if they did not, but alas as my son informs me mum they are hungry they want to eat
