If salt is so very bad for you then why is salt the first thing that the EMS techs give a person (saline solution IV) if they find them passed-out at the scene?? And, although salt may dehydrate your body thereby putting strain on your kidneys, this can easily be controlled by staying hydrated. Drink a lot of fluids, especially boring ole' water. There are a lot worse thing then salt. Like nicotine, alcohol, drugs (legal/illegal), worry, stress, unsafe sex, and new studies even indicate that many health supplements (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, probotics, greens, herbs, etc.) are dangerous, especially when taken with RX drugs or if taken in excess. Salt is not that bad. Did you know that WARS have actually been fought over SALT centuries ago? David.

Too much yes. It dehydrates your system. But some salt in your diet is healthy. If you find that you use salt on everything try a substitute like Mrs. Dash, or Lawyers. Garlic Salt is also very tasty and Garlic kind of has the opposite effect of Salt. Salt alone is not only bad for you, but it's also very gross. If you have swallowed a large amount of salt for a bet, I would recommend drinking lots of water to flush your system, and maybe eating some fruit, to help tone it down a bit.

If you have high blood pressure, consuming salt will likely make your blood pressure worse.

If you have heart failure, kidney disease, or liver disease, consuming even moderate amounts of salt in the diet can lead to serious problems (edema and shortness of breath).

In these conditions doctors usually recommend consuming less than 2 grams of salt total per day (which is a very low salt diet).

If you are completely healthy, the kidneys should be able to excrete a moderate salt load without adverse consequences (ie: eating high salt food such as popcorn, fast food, pizza, beef jerky, canned soups).

In athletics, sometimes people will take a salt tablet to help replace salt lost through sweating. When consuming salt tablets, it is very important to drink large amounts of water as well to maintain adequate hydration.

If one consumes too much salt without anything else (such as taking multiple salt tablets without water or eating pure salt) one can develop a dangerous medical condition called hypernatremia.

Generally, the body regulates its salt concentrations very closely and consuming too much salt will raise the serum sodium which will stimulate thirst, which will cause you to drink water, and thus correct your serum sodium. However, if you subvert this natural balance by taking pharmacological doses of salt or limiting free access to water serious hypernatremia can develop leading to depressed mental status.

It depends in what context. If your like doing a jackass kind of stunt to eat a spoon of salt, you wont die (in most circumstances), but as other people have said, salt in food all the time raises blood pressure which could lead to stiffness of arteries and heart attacks or strokes. But you may get bloated if you eat salt and only salt as a one off thing. I think to see the effects of eating salt, you must be inducing it over a regular basis, and you will become very sick.

My friend ate a sachet of salt, and he got a bit of heart burn and bloated stomach.

This might be worth looking at...

Its the same if you have it alone or with something else, it still has to be excreted by the kidneys.
But in the average American diet
6% is added while eating
5% is added while cooking
12% is from from natural sources
and 77% from processed and prepared foods.
You may or may not be particularly sensitive to the effects of sodium. And because there's no way to know who might develop high blood pressure as a result of a high-sodium diet, it is recommended to choose and prepare foods with less sodium.

Since ancient times, salt has been used to flavor and preserve food. Early trade routes and many of the first roads were established for transporting salt. Many ancient civilizations levied taxes on salt. Salt was considered so precious that it was traded ounce for ounce for gold. In ancient China, coins were made of salt. In the Mediterranean regions, salt cakes were used as money. Ancient cities such as Genoa, Pisa, and Venice became salt market centers. By the fifteenth century, salt was obtained by boiling brine from salt springs, and many towns and cities in Europe located near such sources. During the eighteenth century, the efficiency of the boiling brine process was improved by using coal instead of wood as fuel. Because of its coal supply, England became the leading salt producer in the world. Early colonies in America were dependent on England for most of their salt. After the Revolutionary war, the United States developed saltworks along the Atlantic coast for boiling sea water. After salt springs were discovered in New York, near where the city of Syracuse is today, the Erie Canal was constructed. By the early nineteenth century, equipment and technology was developed for the deep-drilling of wells, a process that improved the quality and increased the quantity of salt springs used for salt production. In the mid-1800s, underground mining of salt deposits began.

The amount of salt needed to sustain a life is of 220 mg. a day, equivalent to one-tenth of a teaspoon. Without this small amount, experts claim one could feel weak and nauseous.
