India is secular mainly due to hindu majority. Barring rare incidents of counter-actions... people of all religions live happily.

Be it jews or zorastrians, india welcomed them with open arms during the time of their troubles, and allowed them to continue following their religion peacefully.

Hindu philosophy is so vast and deep that all religions have a place in it... and all religions have contributed their share in development of India.

Understanding hindu philosophy, opens eyes and we stop thinking in respect of religions, or nations...

Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam.... whole earth is my family.... is the moto of Sanatan Dharma

I agree:
i) that Hindus form majority of the population in India,
ii) Hinduism is a beautiful & really ancient religion, probably having its origin in the heart of India, and
iii) it contributes greatly to the history, heritage & culture of India.

But other religions like Islam, Budhism, Jainism, Sikhism has their own fair part & impact in the country.... And it would be wrong to say that a Hindu can only understand India.Constitutionally, India is essentially secular in nature & as citizens we should respect that & try to keep up the spirit.
And it's wrong to limit the capabilities of people with respect to religion.I've known many who are not Hindus but love the religion & India more than another ordinary Hindu, and there are people who are both Indian & Hindu yet have no urge to explore either the country or the religion's essence.Max Muller was an European but knew India & Hinduism more closely than priests of that age knew the Vedas.
And what about the army people who defend the country, not all of them are Hindus yet don't they understand this country better than us civillians???

Think about it..... Savane.

:)

First of all I will answer to your query. Not a Hindu or Muslim or Christian will not understand India but only an Indian will understand India.

Second regarding your statement. Who told you that Hindu is the soul of India?. There is no religion called Hindu. See all religions are established only after the messengers from Almighty authority took birth on earth and died. Can you point out any prophets (messenger) came to earth in order to establish Hindu religion? All religions have a book that recorded the versus of their prophets (messengers). Even the so called Hindus are treating two books (Ramayana & Bhagavat Gita) as holy books, they are just stories containing truth like salt in a dish. So how we can say that Hinduism is a religion. The truth is that, before all these religions emerged there was a civilized society in which there was no vices, no greed, no attachment and people were pure like lotus. Human beings were living like dieties with full of virtues and divine qualities. That was called "Aadi Sanaadhana Devi Devta Dharma" (The diety religion). While people's divine qualities started diminished due to the predominance of devilish traits in them they fallen from the status of dieties to mere humans having all devilish vices and habits. Still they remember their ancestors but in the form of Gods. That is why in Hinduism there are too many Gods and Godesses. So think who were the soul of Bharath, Hindus or those who were living in "Aadi Sanaadhana Devi Devta Dharma"?

I am a Hindu but i disagree with your statement.
It is not right to say that whoever is not a Hindu does not understand India.

There were innumerable non Hindus in the past who understood and praised Hinduism, such as madam Blavatsky, Annie Besant and Sir John Woodraff.
Even today countless westerners have a high regard for the noble principles of Hinduism.

To be true many Hindus themselves do not understand Hinduism properly today.
To be considered a Hindu it is essential to understand the Sanatana Dharma first.

One should understand also the salient facts of the vedas and the Upanishads.
Merely following the rituals in a blind fashion do not make one a Hindu.
As many ignorantly think that Hinduism is only Ramayana and Mahabharata, which are only epics, the true Hinduism is an ocean of nector.

Hinduism believes in the concept of universal brotherhood( Vasudeva Kutumbam).

It emphasises the principle of Righteousness(Dharma) in all the activities of a human being.

The principle code of conduct advised for one and all, is the Sanatana Dharma, which is the path of righteousness condusive for any human being at any point of time in any country in the world.

Hinduism encourages every one to follow the principles of non violence in solving all human disputes.

'Sarve Jana Sukhino Bhavanthu'.
Let all creations be happy and comfortable.
This is the firm conviction with which a Hindu starts and ends his daily prayers.

Finally as Hinduism believes in Karma and in the concept of rebirth, it lays a heavy stress on the existance of Soul in every living being and in realising the Soul, which is indeed God.

Hinduism considers that not only all the living beings but also nature must be treated properly.
Had the world treated Nature kindly in the past, there would not have been fears of Psunamis and El Ninos, today.

Now tell me as to how many modern Hindus adhere and live in accordance to these lofty principles.
It was Sir John Woodraff who said that Hinduism is being destroyed not by an outsider but by the English educated Hindus themselves.
And believe me he was no ordinary mortal, but one who after resigning his position as the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, took to Hinduism in all seriousness and became a great sage in later years.

He wrote several books in explaining the true value of the greatness of Hinduism, which are considered as jewells by present day scholors, without dispute.

I agree with ur statement that the soul of India is Hindu. But here I'd like to clarify that the word Hindu as I interpret, is beyond religion and is a way of life.

However I shall disagree with the second statement that India can be understood only by hindus(followers of hinduism).

As I see it India can be truly understood by an INDIAN. and Indian means a person who loves India with its multitude of diversity, ethnic, lingual, religious, culinary... etal.

Am proud to say that i love and understand my country INDIA.

Vande Mataram!

PS: vande mataram when translated means - respects to Mother, in this case motherland, its not a hinduistic slogan (had to write this for those zealots/fanatics who shall respond with venegence. LOL)

Does India a collection of over a billion souls of diverse thoughts and ways of life have a collective soul ? Anyone who understands the soul may he or she be a Christian , Muslim, Parsi, Hindu, Buddhist or Jain can be the soul of India. To form opinions about a country or its people and generalise and categorize on basis of these opinions in itself is foolishness . When one says west is materialistic, does it mean all people living in the west have only one kind of thinking and have no spiritual leaning and learning. Please dont try to categorize and make opinions about a country and its people.

I think that is a little unfair, but its your opinion. That unfairly singles out the non-Hindus who have also contributed to making India how it is today.

Undestanding India -----I remember Indus valley civilization along river SINDHU, in LEH (Ladak) where I left my footsteps in this life. Your theory is meaningful. Anyone critisizing a Hindu doctrine is not worth to consider him a universal personality. JAI HIND. .

I believe that most Indians do not understand Hinduism. Anyway there is no respect for women in Hinduism if you are a women you would know this. When your husband dies and your children force you out on the street then you might understand India being a Hindu.
