In my experience the cats do understand limited language (a handful of words), but I also don't train my cats to follow any commands, so I'm not really stretching their mental limits. That being said, much like humans, cats infer much of the meaning of speech in tone and body language.

Well, cats are pretty smart creatures, they know hand signals, and general speech. They probably don't understand English, but they probably can read the inflictions that we put on certain words when we are happy, mad, sad, etc...same as dogs...

My cat knows the word "Bath" and even though he loves the bathtub, he will run outside if I say the word...every single time, beyond being coincidence LOL

Mine answer to a number of things.

"Hey!" means stop it (and they do)
Food Guys! (gets them all running)
Grass! (three come for blades of grass when I call this)
Get Down
Let's Go (means go outside, two will come running for the door)
Woof Woof Woof (This means get out of my way on the stairs!)

All of them know their names and will come when called.

They also know that when I tap something they need to jump up on it.

Two know that if I hold up the brush and don't say a word, they need to run into the bedroom so I can brush them there (it's more convenient for my back).

They know a hand held palm out to them means stop I don't have any food for you.

This is just some, they pick up a lot of stuff, more than you'd think.

To some degree I believe they do. My roommates have a deaf cat, and he responds directly to lip movement (when he's looking at you). Now I'm not suggesting that he can read lips, rather, he knows I'm speaking at him. Plus, I believe he picks up on the vibrations of our voices, similar to how Beethoven used the vibration of his music to "hear" what he was composing.

No, But I do believe they understand body language.

I don't think they understand words, more like the tone of voice.

I can call my cats anything, but if its the nice, soft tone of voice, they rub on me!! lol

i'm not sure if they understand maybe certain words, maybe like their name, but I always call my cats their names, so I don't really know!!!

I do believe they do. mine is a strange little cat, but seems to understand when I talk to him as he meows back. he is a very quiet cat and only does this when I talk to him.

I believe mine understand their names and the words, "Cookie" (cat treat), "All Gone" and "No". I think they just like the sound of the human voice and find it comforting (at least mine do) so I'm talking to them all the time.

I think they do. Few days ago I just said to my cat "Go catch a fly" and as soon as I said it, she started to seek around the palce and then I saw her chasing a fly trying to catch it. It was amazing.
