Why is it that so many people are extremely against religion? In my opinion this is just as "bad" as the people they detest...the "Bible thumpers." I understand being upset at religious groups for imposing morals that others don't agree with..but why is there so much intolerance? To give more insight I am not associated with any religion, and my beliefs really don't fit one specific religion. Sigh...anyway, just curious after reading a lot of seemingly angry responses on here...

Brett..thank you for pointing out the error I made in exclusivity in my question. I worded it it that way because of what I have been witnessing on this website...I believe that "Christian intolerance" or any intolerance is just as bad. I just don't understand why people get so upset and attack each other. I do not agree with people who think that they are the only ones with the right answer, but attacking their views won't help...ya know?

It simply doesn't work that way. Atheists aren't an organized group with agreed-upon, common goals. Christians are. And they're screwing up this world big-time. Simple as that.

Heidi I can see why they would become bitter.
Mans misrule over man has been responsible for the death of millions and the extermination of entire faiths and cultures.
Religion has stood in the path of progress and enslaved countless men, women, and children.
Yes I can see why someone would get fed up with religion.
Sadly they confuse faith and spirituality with religion. This is the same confusion the religious people have. Faith has no need for religion, but religion requires faith.
Faith=Good=God
Religion=Bad=Lucifer
Think of faith as the milk of human kindness and religion as spoiled milk.
Where religion has built evil empires that kill hope faith has made the survivors and their decedents hopeful.
The practice of religion is in the mind. If the mind goes bad by irrational thought to support the religion then darkness overtakes the soul. Good evidence and logic should overwrite and heal irrationality even at the cost of the religion. Faith can’t be damaged by new information.
Almost all the greatest artworks throughout history are associated with religion, while every single piece of artwork ever produced was inspired by faith whether secular or divine.
Religion tried to hold faith hostage and sell it at great cost to humanity and all of us that knew faith and claimed that it was freely available were hunted down to be exterminated by religion.
I could go on eternally about this.
We the faithful accept science while embracing the inspiration of faith.
The faithful do this with tolerance for no one will come to truth until ready.
The perfect love that’s inspired from faith forces me to respect everyone because I must respect to love. All peoples know that when their faith is disrespected they are disrespected and therefore not loved.
Atheists are correct about everything they need for now, and they will remain Atheist so long as they are happy. You have to be happy for them, and when they are angry know they are angry because they are still on their journey. They must spend their frustrations before they can continue their journey. If they are happy, and not angry then Atheism was their final destination, be happy they got where they needed to be.

People seem to have been attacking others and other people have been complaining about it lately. I decided to set up a different type of forum in the groups section of yahoo to give an option aside from this for those that want to discuss religion. I set it up an hour or so ago and hope it takes off:

But there is intollerance on both sides because people feel strongly about this subject. One person might hate religion because their parents forced it on them while someone else might hate atheists because they're calling their faith into question and they haven't developed their faith enough to emotionally handle it.

This is simply not the case with most atheists. There are some who are indeed very bitter about how they were treated by their former religion, and sometimes someone might go 180 degrees regarding their feelings about their ex-faith. This is not surprising. It is human.
However, you will find that most atheists simply want to be left alone. Most will also prefer that your religion be kept out of science classrooms.
There is no atheist consensus. We cover the entire range of politics and opinion.

Because Atheists equate all Christians with Bible thumpers. Actually I hardly have ever read the Bible and could care less that my neighbors are a homosexual couple etc etc...but I really wish people would leave my personal beliefs alone...i don't attack theirs!

You can't understand what you've never had to live. You see the words of the people , but you don't see what is behind those words. Imposing morals? If that was all there was to it that would be an improvement. How many others shoes have you tried on? They rarely fit.

I don't think people are so against religion, but they are against a group of individuals who, by their own definition of their beliefs, feel obligated to force their beliefs on everybody else.
If you believe your role is to "guide" people of other faiths, who you believe are going to everlasting damnation, you would, if you are responsible, make every effort to "save" them.
If you are the recipient of such teaching, there is no way to stop it. These "religious" folks cannot and will not accept any other way of thinking but their own. There is no happy, "live and let live" resolution. It's convert or suffer everlasting hellfire. My way or the highway.
Frankly speaking, if I had to spend eternity with these folks, I'd find myself thinking longingly of the hellfire.
