Don't worry about the Chihuahua being on your chest. He wants to be close to your face, and that's one way for him to do it. He's not trying to dominate you!
The pawing of your face is to get attention. It's cute, but it can be painful.
First of all, make sure that his little nails are kept short. You can trim them, or a groomer or veterinary technician can do it, if you can't.
Second, use a water spray bottle. If he paws your face, give him a quick squirt exactly at the same time as he paws you. (If you can't squirt him fast enough, don't do it. Your timing has to be perfect!)
Only pet him when he has his feet down, not pawing you. But when he is calm, praise him in a soft voice and pet him.
Teach him to sit or lie down on your chest, rather than standing up and pawing you.
As long as he sees that his good behavior gets your attention, and his bad behavior is discouraged with a mild correction, he'll catch on pretty quickly. Chihuahuas are smarter than people think!
Enjoy him -- there is a lot of personality in that little tiny person!

lol mine does this as well. He stands on your chest so he "towers over you". He is telling you that he is in charge and it dominant. This is not a good thing lol, but it depends on how you raise you dog if this is a need to change behavior. He paws at your face for attention, whenever i look away and if he is on my lap he will paw/scratch my arm. Obviously he does not scratch on purpose. He wants you to look at him and pet him. They are funny little dogs :)

I have to agree that putting yourself in an inferior position to a dog (no matter the size) isn't a good idea.
Perhaps your dog is driven into a rage by the look you are giving him?
Then there is always the possibility that your dog is really a plastic surgeon trapped in a tiny dogs body...

Mine does this as well. And for all the people that say "don't let him do that" Puleeze, it's a chihuahuha. There is no damage. He just loves to play that way. I think it's cute. When he's on my chest, he nibbles my ears and literally takes my nose into his back teeth and gives it a chew. Funniest thing ever. We always get a laugh out of his sense of humor.
He's just playing with you. No big drama because he weighs all of 5-7 pounds. =)

he's demanding your attention. However if you give it to him, it encourages that behavoir. If he does that you need to set him down and ignore him.
You give out attention when YOU want it, not when HE wants it.

To the answerer who says "it's a person", er, no, it's a DOG. Actually, that's arguable. I'd use my boot on it if it did that to me.
