case closed. i agree with you.
the only reasonable explanation i can think of is that the churches that practice speakin in tongues are highly charged and play heavily on peoples emotions, i feel some people convince themselves that they need to speak in tongues to receive the holy spirit as the church is always pushing the idea on them. they see the others doing it and for whatever reason, jealousy, attention or genuine desire start babbling.

the link reaffirms pretty much what you have said.
cg what you said is unbiblical, nowhere does it say speaking in tongues is praying from the heart. like previously stated it is rambling and there is no interpreter. your church can twist it anywway you want but i am sorry it is just plain wrong.

Here is an answer I gave to another question on a similar topic. This may give you a different perspective.
I am a very old school Catholic...very traditional and conservative. As such, I was the last person who would ever go to a Charismatic Mass. I used to think that Charismatics weren't "true" Catholics. In my opinion, there wasn't room in the RCC for both us "real" Catholics and those Charismatic lunatics on the fringe.
However, the joke was on me, and one day God decided to set me straight. In prayer, He graced me with the gift of tongues. No one could have been more surprised than me!
I didn't understand the whole "tongues thing". So I did a lot more praying, a lot of questioning, and a lot of reading/studying. And then I most unworthily accepted and have come to appreciate this special gift from God. The more open I have been to the Lord, the more He has blessed me with some other Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Since then I have been to Charismatic Mass, healing services, Bible studies and even a weekend conference. However I also still do traditional things like pray the rosary, go to Adoration and am looking forward to attending Latin Mass sometimes.
What I now know is that Catholic Charismatics aren't like those crazy hoopin' and hollerin' new-agey people you see on televangelist programs. You actually can be Charismatic and incredibly reverent all at the same time.
I thank our Heavenly Father for His grace and love and for finding me worthy!

If I may be allowed to copy one of my previous answers:
[I am a believer, but I do not think the modern "tongues" movement corresponds to what was going on in the apostolic age.
I went to some fifteen Pentecostal communities of different denominations during their evening services, and I quoted the first few paragraphs from St. John's Gospel in Greek. Nobody knew I was doing this--the Holy Spirit didn't tell them. In fact, in almost every one, somebody stood up to "interpret" what I said. Everyone got it wrong.
I systematically recorded "speaking in tongues", and found that the speakers didn't use enough phonetic diversity for what they were saying to be a language. There was even some relationship between the sounds made by members of the same community.]
One of these was a Charismatic group at St. Dominic's.
I would like to recommend this article as well: http://www.lumengentleman.com/content.asp?id=67

That is what people say today but the Bible says in the book
1 Corinthians 14 verse 39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
So my sister let us consider todays view of tongues in light of the scriptures. What shall we do? : Acts 4:19-20 (But Peter and John answered and said unto them, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.
(Great example of standing on the word of God!)
Resist temptation lest you fall into sin and "Judge not lest ye be judge", if you judge someone's tongues and it is of God you judge the Holy spirit himself! If it is not of God than that person will answer to God like wise all humans, just or wicked. As for me Dear,
I observe Corinthians 14 :15 What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.
God Bless You Beloveth

My preacher heard some woman get up and do that and he got nervous very weird. He just freaked out and was like is there an interpretor????!!!!!!!!!
He had apparently a couple of years before walked over to a person doing that and told them to quit that they were out of line. Most of it's for show. Just like a lot of things in church today.

dear friend
please take the time to read this:
the gift of tongues still exists in our world!
my mother, grandmother and grandfather all have the gift
they do not use it to boast
they only use it when praying over someone or at charismatic meetings or services.
its true that it should not be used to 'boast'
and yes, it is different from what it used to be
back then, the gift of tongues enabled people to spread the Good News far and wide, to other countries and many other people
nowdays, it is different. it is not used to preach to other nations. it is a form of prayer
when you pray, you think with words. you might try to make them sound good to 'please God more' or make yourself sound more sincere.
when you pray in tongues, you pray from your heart.
its not like praying woth words, and thinking what to pray next, it just comes straight from your heart
you dont know exactly what you are saying, but somehow deep inside, you do know, and God knows. thats what counts
i have experienced the gift of tongues on several occasions, and i can assure you that it is not a hoax or an act to impress people. i am aware that some may use it to 'boast' and pretend they do, but i believe that it is real
thank you for taking the time to read this
please add additional details to your question if you want to ask me anything else...
God bless
EDIT
good answers by president and sparkplug
fenian: if you do not have the gift, you do not know what it is like. having never experienced it for yourself, your judgement is unjustified. it is not 'plain wrong'. my church doenst make a bid deal out of it. and its not for others to understand what you are saying.
its between YOU and GOD
and no, what i have said is not entirely biblical, its personal experience, just for the record, im not an idiot and i know what im saying
for all those going on about interpreters, the gift of tongues is different to what it was. its not about interpreting it for others, its a style of praying and a gift of the Spirit
you have the choice to believe or not..............make up your own mind
after witnessing it myself on a number of occasions, i know that its very real!
God bless

Why don't you read the book of Acts? And yes it is real, Jesus said he would send a conforter, (The Holy Spirit), he also stated that this conforter that he would send, he said he will not only be with you, but he shall be in you. When one is filled with the Holy Spirit, the evidence of this is speaking in a different language. There are nine gifts of the Spirit. There are two different types of speaking in tongues. One being filled with the Holy Spirit. God using you, as a vessell to send a word to the Church as a whole, with an interperter being there that can tell the Church what was said. Some people have both gifts of the Spirit. Once you are filled with the Spirit, then you can be used by God. The other is ones individual prayer language. Just between them and Jesus, not for everyone else to know what is being said. How can you disregard the gifts of the Spirit. Every Christian should want to be used by God.
1 Corinthians 14:1 Follow after Love, and desire Spiritual Gifts,(meaning we should want the gifts of the Spirit), but rather that you may prophesy. ( one of the nine gifts) (prophesy being the greater of the two vocal gifts).
14:2 For he who speaks in an unknown Tongue speaks not unto men, but unto God. (an individuals prayer language between them and God, which they receive upon being baptized with the Spirit), for no man understands him, howbeit in the Spirit he speaks mysteries. (not for anyone but God to understand)
14:3 But he who Prophesies (speaks of the sixth Gift of the Spirit)speaks unto men to Edification, and Exhortation and Confort.(This is spoken to the Church)
14:4 He who speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself: but he who Prophesies edifies the Church.
14:5 I would that you all spoke with Tongues, but rather that you Prophesied: for greater is he who Propheisies than he who speaks with Tongues, except he Interpret, that the Church may receive Edifying.
14:6 Now, Brethren, if I come unto you speaking with Tongues, what shall I profit you(refering to ones own prayer language), except I shall speak to you either by Revelation, or by Knowledge, or by Prophesying or by Doctrine? (meaning using the Gift of Tongues for the edifying of the Church)(Ones own prayer language only benifits the individual, One Prophesying is for the Church as a whole, A word from God, for the Church) It goes on to explain the proper time your prayer language is to be used. He explaines that saying a prayer over a meal with others at the table is not the proper time to use your prayer language, because no one else can understand it. It is just for praying between them and God. And the gift of Prophesying in Tongues is for the Church, with either that same person interperting it or someone else in the Church with the Gift of interpertation. (another gift of the Spirit). (this is to be done in an orderly fashion) Prophesying in Church will be one person (chosen by God, Given the Gift by God, filled with the Holy Spirit, speaking the word from God to the Body of the Church). During praise and worship anyone filled with the Spirit can pray to God in english or any other language, God understands all languages. And yes people are very much filled with the Holy Spirit, the only requirement is to be saved and to ask to be filled with the Holy Spirit, then you can be used by God to carry out his work. But the Holy Spirit will not reside in an unclean vessell, you must be right with God in order to be filled.
