AC means ALTERNATING CURRENT

so called bcoz the magnitude of the current rises to a maximum in one direction, decreases to zero and then flows in the opposite direction to complete a cycle. Therefore, the direction of current in the circuit keeps on changing.

AC stands for Alternating Current, because it alternates between positive and negative current 60 times a second (in North America, 50 in parts of Europe and many other places).
DC means Direct Current, as from a battery.
