I have a software and drivers disc that came with my Compaq laptop. I also have a Compaq desktop, but it did not come with a software and drivers disc. Can I use the disc that came with my laptop to reinstall the software and drivers on my desktop instead? The only difference is that my laptop has a DVD player and my desktop doesn't.

There is a very good chance that the disks will work. Just give it a try and if you still need help, contact Compaq.

Mostly HP/Compaq desktops with XP or Vista don't ship with recovery disks, instead they have a hidden backup partition on the hard drive which can be used to reinstall an operating system .
You can however make a cd/dvd from this partition by doing the following.
To create the recovery disc set, Click Start, All Programs, PC Help & Tools (or similar), open HP or Compaq's Recovery CD-DVD Creation software, and follow the on-screen directions.
Be aware that if you do this you and lose the disc you won't be able to recover your system.
As for using laptop recovery disks,it MAY work but I would not recommend it anyway, there would be different drivers etc.
good luck anyway
