which is the one that can prescribe medication and which is the one for counseling only?

psychiatrist is a doctor and can proscribe meds, there isn't as much "feelings" talk involved, and it's more serious.
You should only go to a psychiatrist if you have a serious mental disorder. Otherwise, you might just need counseling and you should go to a psychologist.

The Psychiatrist is a medical doctor, specializing in the brain, the workings of the mind and behavior and emotions of a person. This Dr. can both prescribe medication, and do therapy.
The Psychologist is also known as a Dr., however cannot prescribe medications. This is a Dr. specializing in the behavior and emotions and thought process. While there are many applications for persons with this degree, those seeing clients are able to assist people in their behavior and abilities to cope with life through counseling/therapy.

Psychologist only counsels. They do not have license to prescribe medication.
Psychiatrist used to do a lot of therapy. However, due to the poor payment by the insurance for times of therapy, most psychiatrists now only prescribe medication, with only some limited therapy.

psychiatrist for prescriptions, psychologist for counseling and therapy. psychiatrists go to school longer, and have the credentials to prescribe meds, whereas psychologists do not.
