My son was born with one kidney. He is otherwise a very healthy, active 17 month old boy. The doctors have told me he will live a normal life but he must not play contact sport, drink too much alcohol or add salt to food.

Does anyone else have a child with one kidney? Being a boy, I'm worried he wont take it seriously when he's older, especially when he's a teenager. Any advice?

I had an elderly friend who surprised me when she told me she had been born with only one kidney. She was in her mid-eighties.

As it turns out, her teenage grandson had to have one of his kidneys removed because he formed stones over and over again.

I have two sons. Neither of them chose contact sports anyway. There are plenty of other activities a boy can do. Usually, contact sports aren't anything boys get involved with until secondary school (although I know there could be the kid in the neighborhood who's into contact sports before that). Usually, though, its secondary school when the decision to play something like football comes up. By then your son will understand why he can't do that.

I would think if you tell him why he can't do those things he'll take it seriously. If you raise your child to be intelligent, have good sense, and realize that you know what you're talking about he'll take it seriously. Boys aren't different from girls when it comes to being capable of doing what they need to do.

Well, I don't know what to tell you about what you can expect with your son, but I want to tell you about myself. I'm 45, and was told at 38, during an ultrasound done to detect gall stones, that I have only one kidney - the left one. I've never had any problems with it, it works perfectly well, and I've given birth 4 times, so if it can cope with 4 full term pregnancies, it works fine. If it wasn't for the ultrasound, I would be ignorant of the fact to this day.
I don't drink, (haven't for more than 20 years) but that's a personal choice, and not done because of this.
One of my brothers, who used to lift 280lb on a bench press, found out that he was the same. He's in his forties too, 3 kids and works full time, no other problems. Found out on an ultrasound after a motor bike accident. Wouldn't have known otherwise.
So talk with the doctor, and don't worry.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

Well i have 2 kidneys but one only works like 5% and the other less then 50%....so Im somwhere at the 40% put them together. i was born with healthy kidneys but had irreverable damage at 9 months. So this is something i have lived with ALL my life. I am not as lucky though because i have other health issues to concider, however, i have to see my kidney guy every 3-6 months depending on infections and test results. Easy on the alchol and also modification on medications that i am put on. I cant go on certain meds or if i do i have to be on pretty low dose. Im on antibiotics right now...standards protocal is twice a day im on it once to protect my kidneys. The BEST thing that i could tell you is skip the whole pop thing....pop is hard on your kidneys because it makes it work harder and it dehydrates it...will effect your son more. Then when they get older its harder to get out of the habit that is bad for them from the start...i know a lot of people in 20's that are tryingto limit pop and its a hard habit to break...since its harder on your son anyways try to eliminnate that battle for him.I was origonally told by dr when i was little to drink 4 times as much water as the average person...later found out that was the dr's way of getting me to make sure i drank my daily amount...its more imortant for me and your soon to do that but great for everyone....i NEVER touched pop till i was in high school. and at 23 im thankful i drink a can of pop mayber 2 or 3 a month and thats in phases...usually just water. Cranberry juice is also great for kidneys. My suggestion to you is to with the alcohol situation is TALK to your soon at arounf 11 or 12 about the riskd that he is taking.....Tell him that you understand there is peer pressure and want to be like everyone else but that isn't ok...your health is key....I drank underage but it was equivelent to 1 beer every 6 months. it was always with family. Maybe cause of the circumstance allow underage drinking but only those condtions and with friends his butt is yours...this way you teaching him to drink responsible with responsible people round and possibly wont feel like its a reqirement to drink behind back and drink too much and hurt himself. That is completely up to you and your morals but just a suggestion to perhaps to get the alcohol that he so craves in teen years but not where it will hurt and will teach him how to be as an adult...it worked for me i didnt drink with friends till iwas and in college. I drink some but usually only 2 or 3 drinks TOPS...it gets me feeling good but im not hurting myself TOOOO much.
