Why is it that when someone asks for information about the
Bible there is always someone who will write something dumb
like... "Wow! You're older than my 5 year old kid and you
don't know a thing!"? Or "Ha! You take advice from some old
book" If you are not going to help or don't know a thing about
the subject, why bother to waste 10 seconds of your life typing something useless?
Why do some Christians/religious people (who are supposed to help those who do not know much about Christ learn about him) sometimes write comments that ... pretty much insults the asker who is ONLY trying to read and learn about the Bible to understand some of the BELIEFS of others?
Maybe they're in their quest to find God? Can somebody answer this or atleast... I don't know... give me a good reason why this occurs?

law of averages sweetie...some people just aren't happy so they get their jollies by making other people feel bad. You're going to find people like that no matter where you look, but especially on the Internet where you don't have to look people in the eyes while you insult them! I teach online classes and I'm always shocked at the things some students will say to me in email...things they would never consider saying to my face!

When you have a question, ask it...but try to avoid words that trigger hostility. And when you get replies, look for those that clearly tried to answer your question...ignore the rest!

I would hope that you have another place to ask your questions too! This is a public forum so you're going to find all kinds of people here...but if you joined a small group fellowship or bible study at your church, you're not likely to find a lot of athiests that want to shoot you down OR Christians that don't understand the importance of learning and asking questions about God.

Hey, if you're interested, I attend an online church on Saturday evenings (7 PM Central time)...my "handle" is KarenL and I'm usually in the "lobby chat room" before, during and after the service. Our online pastor and several other people are also there and I can assure you that no one would insult you or talk down to you if you have questions. I can't promise that we'll know the answers, but we could at least pray for you that God would answer your questions. You can get the Web address for our church from my profile (I'll type it in there as soon as I submit this message).

Hoo boy, this happens in *every* belief system. Pagan as well. I think it's the power button syndrome if you want the truth of the matter. People want to come off "big bad and all-knowing" and so they spout off. Sad, innit? It only shows their true colors, though, which is perhaps for the best for those on their Spiritual quest. Someone else said if you don't like what you're reading, move on - she was right - but try not to let it get you down - or take it personally - remember there are trolls who are on here just to snark it up and see if they can get a rise out of people - for kicks - apparently it will do all sorts of things for their "puter cred", Gods knows it won't do a thing for their "Street cred" ;)
Breathe in and out, read all you can, experience all you can and know you're not alone in your spiritual questing - whatever Path you're meant to be on will find you. I'd start with the Bible, read the Gnostic Gospels as well, everything you can get your hands on, really - there are little threads of Truth everywhere - but I believe personally that no one belief system has ALL the answers. *shrugs* Trust your instincts.....not the trolls. You'll be fine.
Blessings on your Quest.

The first answer just proved your point. As a Christian, I would like to say that I am sorry that some Christians/religious people have answered your questions in such a rude manner. There are people out there who ask questions of Christians in such a way as to sound like they are mocking Christianity or Jesus Christ Himself. When questions are worded in that way, we Christians sometimes tend to get a little miffed and are defensive in our answers. On the other hand, if a person who is not a Christian asks a sincere question with the intent on finding the answer to that question, then it is incredibly rude and gives Christianity a bad name when those of us who claim to be Christians give a rude response.

christians who answer the questions only answer incorrectly or write insulting comments if they:
1. Feel insulted by the question
2. Think that the asker is just being stupid
3. Don't actually know the answer

Probably around age four or five, certainly before I entered school, and at around the same time I learned that it was okay to disagree with someone but not to call them names or belittle them when expressing that disagreement, nor to retaliate in kind when names were flung at me. It's something that proved valuable in the extreme about 10 years later, when mandatory integration (on a percentage-per-school basis) of my city's largest district meant that many of us were suddenly riding the bus for up to an hour with kids who brought their parents' hostility about it on board with them, and there we were, in a confined space with heated emotions. It was the crucible in which we learned to see each other as individuals. We had to; it was either that, or things degenerated quickly. But it forever solidified for me the wrongness of characterizing entire groups of people with sweeping "they" generalizations. Many people in R&S might have benefitted from being on that bus, as well.

Oh those guys are the queers who hate chrisitanity and will do absolutely everything in their power to deface it's name because it doesn't like the way they are. Or the Atheists who hate just about every religion and have studied the bible trying to find a reason to believe in god, but however are unsuccessful because their is no "proof" and they can't see beyond the words of it.

OR cuz the internet is full of *** holes who get their kicks out of other people's pain. And by *** holes I mean nerd kids who got their lunch money stolen in school and feel as though they can pick on everyone on the internet because they have "anonymosity" .

as atheists we are trying to help you understand that believing in such a book is - well - infantile. All it takes to know this is the smallest bit of an open mind and a desire to know truth. some times we get carried away, but at least we're staying within the realm of reality and not faith which, quite frankly, is nothing but wishful thinking.

this happens because most people don't care if they help or not. every time some one answers a question, regardless of its relevancy he get two points. so if people want to rack up the point, all they have to do is be a smart a** and they earn points. in addition, they feel like they can be cool for awhile, but they are lame.

Because many people are jerks. Many are not, fortunately. But many are. You have to take the bad with the good here at R&S. One interesting thing about this part of Yahoo answers that I have noticed is that the only section where people are as rude as here is politics and society and culture. Other sections people treat each other with common courtesy.

Bad manners. But, all too frequently, a question in this forum isn't representative of a desire to learn; it is just a screed advocating some religion, or the lack thereof, and it is not unreasonable to treat these with less than kindness.
