Tips are considered part of their compensation. It is very rude to not leave a tip for good service! These people work very hard and if you don't tip them, part of their compensation is lost. How would you feel short changing a working mother who has children at home to support? Better yet, how would you feel if you only received part of YOUR compensation? All work is honorable and all people deserve to be treated in a fair manner for an honest days work! If one does not wish to tip for good service they should stay at home! I think 20 percent is fair for good service! Most of the time, I give over that depending on how good the service is!

I do not want to come over as being too harsh, but I feel I should speak my mind!
I hope you do not pass your lack of fairness on to impressionable children! By the way, the student does not have to "tip" you since the taxpayer already takes care of that!

Most waiters / waitresses earn less than $3 / hour, exempting any tips. It used to be that you left a tip if you received excellent service; now it's so expected a lot of restaurants even print a recommended gratuity.

I know that teachers at public schools don't make bank. In Utah, the starting salary is a measely $27k / year.

Just so you know? Right now I am currently a CNA.. And I don't know if you know exactly what that job entails..? But it is one of the hardest jobs I could ever do. You have to give all of you to these people that you take care of. It physically, emotionally, mentally draining.. It is TOUGH.. But when I worked as a server in just an average italian restaurant.. That was just as tough. It took every once of me. I make about 15 dollars an hour as an aide? And I made minimum wage as a server. Some servers don't even make that. Tips are essential for these people to make a living. And they deserve the greatest of respect.

You don't make the crap wages a waiter/waitress make. The state allows their employer to pay them less than minimum wage because they think that they make it up in tips. When you make $3 per hour with the expectation of tips you have to share with the cook and dishwasher...then compare your teaching salary with a wait person's salary.
Until then...20%. A wait person also is taxed on their tips and earnings...even if they don't make the minimum...they are taxed as if they do.
I know...I've been a waitress several times in my life.
Thank God for your teaching salary and lets show the wait staff some compassion. Many times no one leaves tips and there is no more than $3 per hour for a wait person. You still get taxed as if you made minimum.
Wake up America!

Because the people who you tip live off the tips, not the 'wages' which are about $2 an hour. I am not a waitress, but have many waitress friends. It is a hard job in which you have to wait on a lot of people who are difficult to deal with, pretend to be happy about it, and then get stiffed with a person who doesn't believe in tipping! Be grateful you don't have to live off of tips!

Cause waiters/resses get paid lower because tips are expected in their jobs by their employers. Sort of like a commission. Someone earns a wage + tips...but the wage is usually less than other jobs by far.

I'm a teacher but I don't do it for the money (who would?). I do it because I want to be a teacher. However, my roommate (I can't afford my own place yet) is a waiter and he makes almost twice as much in cash tips per evening (not even counting his wage) and he words fewer hours has less stress and far less education.

Tipping is about as optional and wasteful as taking a shower in drinking water. (think about it, this won't be even be possible in the near future) Social pressure makes us do the strangest things in the name of politeness but in the end can be foolish at best and very dangerous at worst.

My husband and I argue about this all the time. He tips everyone. I think people should only get tipped well for excellent service. I remember being in elementary school, and I had a few favorite teachers. At the end of the year we got them gifts to show our appreciation for their job well done. I think everyone should do that. I think it would motivate people to do their jobs well. People expect something for nothing, and frankly I'm tired of it. Thank you for putting up with all those kids. I couldn't do it.

First of all, it should be said that teachers should be paid more.

It is a good custom to tip service people such as waiters because they often are paid very little, even less than teachers. Also, because they are waiting on your cheap a.ss. If you start bringing your students ice water, ask for a tip.

Waiters/waitress don't make as much money as you think. Tips are where they make most of their money. I had the same attitude until I started working in the hospitialty trade. These men and women work their butts off for small paychecks.Would you work 40hrs. a week and bring home less than 200.00? I didn't think so. The tips supplement their paychecks.
