The reason why I ask is because I think my mom's dog may have it if it's possible...

My mom has a 5-year-old lab/ chow mix. earlier on in the dog's life, it looked halfway decent and was very playful but the last time I saw her... She looked massively overweight and she has no energy whatsoever... I know for a fact that the dog doesn't have a very good diet (mom doesn't feed it dog food, so it lives off human food)

The only thing I really learned by seeing my mom's dog again was that if I get a dog, which is my plan, to not let my mom watch it!

i cook for my dog but he eats healthy. he is a four year old shepherd (with a perfect weight) so as long as you feed your dog balanced meals and no junk he/she will be fine. dogs can definitely have diabetes and your mum should put the dog on a diet ASAP

Yes, a dog can become diabetic. Also, dogs cannot get the nutritional value they need from just human food. It can make them sick.

Yes, but usually they lose weight. Female dogs gain wt. simply from being fixed and age. Also, it needs proper diet. Without good nutrition most body systems of a dog can be damaged and altered.

It can get diabetes, but my guess is this dog is hypothyroid. None of us can actually diagnose teh dog here because we can't see it or do any testing, but it does sound like she needs a vet check up. See if you can convince Mom to take her.

yes it can get diabetes....

some breed are prone to gland probs which can cause overweight.... my golden had a thyroid prob and was forever overweight.....

MOST IMOPRTANTLY is that dogs need certain nutrients that they won't get from eating our leftovers..... you may think your being nice and your dog may love you for it but feeding it primarily people food is as cruel as feeding a person nothing but mcDonnalds for their entire life.... that life won't be too long and neither wil your dogs if its only fed people food
