If so, what? And more importantly, why?

I'm trying to get more of a feel for how so-called followers of the Bible approach the questionable areas...

Don't just brush off the Old Testament. Tell me why. That's the important part.

Anyway, if you interpret it, you're bringing in a degree of subjectivity, are you not?

A Believer: You may be gone by now, but I think I understand your position. My question to you, then, is this: why do we even have the parts of the Bible that are ignored now? What is the purpose of it all?

I am not Christian, but I wanted to answer your question, regardless.

I feel that, if you are going to call yourself a Christian, you should take it upon yourself to understand your own faith. What is the point of claiming something, when you actually know nothing about it? For me, as long as they know what it says, that's good enough. In this day and age, it's difficult to expect anything more.

In my opinion, there is no point following a faith, the details of which you do not know. Time and time again, I've found that I know more than most Christians; though I'm not Christian; I seem to follow more of their guidelines than they do.

I was once told by a pastor that, "half of what is in the Bible is crap." This was fairly striking, for me--the Bible has been around for a while; they've kept it, and everything, so it must have something going for it. And yet, they disregard it--why? That, I will never comprehend.

I, for one, try to simply be a good person, whether it complies with the teachings of the Bible, or it does not. I go by what I feel is right and moral; I think that to a certain extent, some Christians do the same.

Really, though--engaging in certain activities may be irresponsible or immoral, but is really grounds for being stoned to death? In my opinion, no. So obviously, I feel that certain parts of the Bible SHOULD, in fact, be ignored.

All in all, I am simply of the opinion that the Bible should be revised; or at least a modern companion developed. Just the same, it would be beneficial to continue employing the traditional Bible as a learning tool.

In my rather biased opinion, it's a way of teaching; of understanding and communicating new ideas. I'm young, but trying to learn as much as I can--I thrive on knowledge; strive to obtain it, and keep it. Without our minds, what would we have? Nothing.

Therefore, I'd say we should follow our instincts when faced with decisions of right versus wrong. The Bible has, unfortunately, stayed the same, and we should ALL understand and learn from it, but the human mind evolves with time--it adapts, and accepts new ideas.

So I guess the point I'm getting to is; the Bible has its good points, but it's bad points, as well--for the good, we can follow it, but to some extent, there is no substitute for our own minds.

The Bible is the word of God and holds the ways of life for those who listen and ponder over it, It contains all the answers for man to survive and gain eternal life here on earth. It is our instruction book for now and into the future. It is to be used to correct our thinking in matters of belief, It is the only book on earth that gives us hope and the more we study the more it revels God's plans for his earth and for human kind. If a person makes a humble and serious effort to understand it, the truth will be evident.
All 66 books are inspired of God. 2 Timothy 3:16.
(2 Peter 1:20-21) . . .For YOU know this first, that no prophecy of Scripture springs from any private interpretation. 21 For prophecy was at no time brought by man’s will, but men spoke from God as they were borne along by holy spirit.

Anti-gay Christians ignore many things in the Bible (while refusing to admit it), but the passages they interpret as anti-gay must be hoisted to super-sin status. At that point, they can claim these passages as the reason for homophobia and passing of laws which restrict the civil rights of gay men and women. The hypocrisy of the anti-gay mevement is why millions of gay and lesbian Americans cannot take them seriously.

Nothing should be ignored. If you want to understand why it seems we ignore somethings and pay attention to others then the first 8 chapters of Romans is real clear about it. Especially chapters 2 and 3. I could paraphrase and say all that is truly important is our relationship with GOD through Jesus finished work on the cross. If that is in place then all the other things happen naturally.

This is not a vague dodge. It is the answer to your question.
Great Question by the way.

No part of the Bible should be ignored. It is all tied in together in relatiing the things we need to know from the past and prophesys of what to look for in the future.

No none of it should be ignored but step back and analyze it in the context of the big picture .Ignorance of the unknown or wall banging contentions are usually a vacation and regrouping of forces or just admitting some things seem impossible.

I am NOT a Christian but I believe in God and the bible. I'm thinking the part about washing your mans feet with your hair. And all the stoning ppl to death stuff...then again that might work good for pedophiles and murderers.

AND I really wish all the Christians AND Catholics would pay attention to the fact that the only "MARRIAGE" mentioned in the bible is when a man and woman do the nasty then they are considered husband and wife in Gods eyes! NOTHING to do with vows and a church ceremony! That really chaps my a s s!

All of the scriptures constitute the authentic, inerrant, inspired, written word of God.

Anyone who chooses to "ignore" any part, does so at his own eternal peril.

The same is true for those who attempt to privately interpret scripture, to suit their own ends.

Yes, Jesus said to ignore a lesser rule if it ever conflicted with a greater rule. I.e. help out your parents before you give to God (to be clearer, if your parents are in need, do not say, "I cannot help you, I have pledged this money as an offering to the temple"). Conflicts always arise in life (there are way to many variables). Always choose the greater good.

Nice question.
