If you are seen driving while using a hand held cell phone (without an accident being involved) the fine is $285.00 and the traffic officers are looking with extra diligence because it means a lot of extra money for the state and local governments. If an accident is involved, the fine goes thru the roof and then the insurance companies also get to raise your rates because while you had the accident, you were BREAKING THE LAW!.

Studies have shown that driving while talking on a cell phone, most drivers are as impaired as drunk drivers. Now I did say most and in my experience I have noticed a lot of people on cell phones not paying attention while driving.I don't understand why people need to drive around talking on a cell phone anyway. If you need to make a call while on the road, buy a hands free device. In other words hang the phone up and pay attention while you drive!

This is great. I use a cell phone, but when you are preoccupied with holding and talking while driving, especially in California, can you really be diligent on the traffic situations around you? Your reaction time? People need to pay attention to the road. Get a head phone and keep both hands on the steering wheel.

To be honest, if I'm not talking on the phone... I get car narcolepsy and fall asleep. Honestly. I start calling people just I feel like I'm being a safe driver, lol.

That said, I have no problem going to the store and buying a Bluetooth headset so that at least I can be Hands-free and safe. So... Kinda frustrated about the law, but glad too, because it'll force me to run over to Cingular and buy the headset.

It's another irrational law, put in place by people who would rather regulate conduct than solve problems.

There was already a law on the books making it illegal to drive while distracted (by anything), and other laws making reckless conduct while driving illegal. So, if someone was actually being reckless or distracted, they could have been charged with those laws.

However, that took too much effort, so the politicians just made all conduct illegal, just in case that conduct might lead to an inceased risk of the driver possibly having a problem.

It's paternalistic nonsense that typifies everything that's wrong with both the state and federal govt. And it's getting more common.

And people claim California is liberal....... not even close.

Long time coming. There's nothing scarier than an anorexic 90 lb woman turning a corner with a cell phone to her ear while driving an escolade full of soccer kids in Orange County.

Why have people became so dependent on their cell phones? I remember not that long ago, these boxes of communication did not even exist! I believe that humanity can exist without having a phone glued to your ear 24/7.

Wow. Glad you warned me. I'll be extra careful not to take a wrong turn and stumble into California. I live on the East Coast, that happens to a lot of people here.
