Cairns are people dogs and do not like to be left alone for long periods. They can also be fantastic escape artists so I would not let them loose in and out for this long. You will undoubtedly have a missing terrier. I would say an enclosed kennel would be a better option than letting a terrier run loose. You would be setting yourself up for lots of problems.

I would think with an Australian Shepherd it would not be a great idea to leave the two dogs unattended for that long. If you can work it out so you crate the cairn for four hours and have someone come in and let them out for 30-60 minutes for a walk and some play you will be okay.

If you cannot do this I would wait to get any other dog. If you can find someone to help out then you might want to consider an older rescue Cairn. This will be an easier transition than a puppy who cannot hold it that long.

Also if the Australian is a female I would get a male and vice versa. Terriers do not always do great with other females. I also wouldn't think a male would back down from another male.

If you have thoroughly researched the breed and know what you have to do to properly train a terrier. I would take your time selecting the right dog from a reputable breeder or get a recommendation from the National Cairn Terrier Club.

My Cairn is almost 14 years old, and I've had her since she was 8 weeks old. I was fortunate that I was able to take her to work with me when she was young so I could potty train her. Now she is home all day while I'm at work. When they are young they have a lot of energy, but aren't too wild. They like to play and go for walks and runs. As long as you can spend time with her every night and on weekends you should be fine. Also, make arrangements to come home at lunch or have a pet sitter do so while she is a puppy. I wouldn't leave a puppy alone for 8 hours. They're an awesome breed! :)

My parents have a carin terrier and it's a small dog, but it does like to be active. I don't think any dog should be left at home. I know my parents have spoiled theirs, and when he THINKS he's home alone, he just lays on the couch and howls for them. I have to get up and remind him that he isn't alone, then he stops.

If he has playmates and people around he should be alright, just make sure theres some kind of company there for him.

If the dog has plenty of outdoors (like you said it would) and something to keep him busy (like your brother's Aussie) then I think this would be a great dog for you! Just make sure he has all vaccinations and flea, tick, heartworm preventative since he'll have free outdoor access.

8 hours is too long for a cairn. They need a lot of socialization.
