The major Female ranges are Soprano (basically Middle C to E above high C and above) and Alto G below Middle C to High C or D. Obviously these are for beginners. The range for professionals is listed on a handy little chart by Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocal_range
As you can see, Tenor and Bass are male ranges. A female ranges include Coloratura Soprano, Soprano 1, Soprano 2, Alto, Contralto,
Male ranges include Lyric Tenor, Tenor, Baritone, Bass, and Basso Profundo.
The simplest way to know if you are a soprano or alto is to listen to our voice. If you are a female and sing comfortably in a high range, you are a soprano. If you sing in a middle or low range, you are an alto.
Examples of Coloratura Sopranos in Popular Music - Mariah Carey and Minnie Riperton
Examples of Altos in Popular Music - Toni Tennile, Anita Baker, Julie London
While many young women have coveted the range of the Soprano, just as many, if not more female singers have achieved popularity with an alto range, which just goes to show that it's the quality of the voice, and the discipline behind it that are treasured, more than the range of notes being sung!

Most people who have never studied voice sing lower than they are meant to. This is because we live in a society in which female singers in popular culture rarely use their head voice, which is essential for singing the higher notes. If you take professional voice lessons, the comfortable middle range of your voice (the Italian word for this is "tessitura") will most likely get higher. Whether you are a soprano or an alto has absolutely nothing to do with how big a person you are! There are plenty of absolutely huge women who sing soprano in operas. FYI, whether you are a soprano or an alto is not determined by your range, because well-trained singers have pretty much the same range. Voices are classified by your tessitura, plus the weight, color, and agility of your voice. What I would suggest is that you should find a good voice teacher -- find one who has classical training, and if you can find one who belongs to the National Association of Teachers of Singing, so much the better. You should at least have a teacher with a degree in singing, because there are a lot of quacks out there passing themselves off as voice teachers, and you want to be sure to find one who is really qualified. You may very well turn out to be a soprano without realizing it, but if it turns out that you are an alto, at least you will have learned to sing with good technique, and in any case your range will be expanded, thus expanding the repertoire you can sing.

Soprano is the highest women's voice range, followed by Mezzosoprano and Alto is the third lowest. You determine it , I imagine, by how high a voice range you have. Talk to a music teacher and see if he/she can determine it for you. Chances are, though, if you sit/stand in the Alto section of the school or church choir, you are an Alto.
