Cairns are great little dogs and unlike many of terrier breeds suck as Jack Russels, they are not hyper. Our Cairn is almost seven and she is a great little dog. They are laid back and loving; although, Rue is not a lap dog. Even though they are laid back, they LOVE to explore the outdoors. If a dog can smile, Ruby does when we are on a hike, she loves it. Cairns are also loyal and not nearly as stubborn as many terrier breeds. You do need to be sure that your doggie door leads to a very secure fenced in area because like all terriers they will dig.

My Cairn is almost 14 years old, and I've had her since she was 8 weeks old. I was fortunate that I was able to take her to work with me when she was young so I could potty train her. Now she is home all day while I'm at work. When they are young they have a lot of energy, but aren't too wild. They like to play and go for walks and runs. As long as you can spend time with her every night and on weekends you should be fine. Also, make arrangements to come home at lunch or have a pet sitter do so while she is a puppy. I wouldn't leave a puppy alone for 8 hours. They're an awesome breed! :)

My parents have a carin terrier and it's a small dog, but it does like to be active. I don't think any dog should be left at home. I know my parents have spoiled theirs, and when he THINKS he's home alone, he just lays on the couch and howls for them. I have to get up and remind him that he isn't alone, then he stops. If he has playmates and people around he should be alright, just make sure theres some kind of company there for him.

No, most dogs get lonely and tend to act out. You are inviting trouble. Get the dog after you return from your trip or don't bring one home at all. If you ever decide to purchase/obtain a dog, buy two or more so they will have company. Always be kind to your animals. Loving dogs will help you to live a longer more enjoyable life.

Always make sure that the have plenty of water and food (preferably a mixture of wet and dry) and some safe dog toys to play with.

That's a long time to leave a dog each day.. Is someone home to train, and spend time w/ the dog?

No. Terriers are extremely active, he would go insane with boredom and start either destroying your house, or destroying his crate and/or chewing nervously on his own body out of frustration.

You need something extremely laid back, like a bulldog or bloodhound, if you plan to be away so much.
