Definitely go with the Bluray player with an HDMI cable. it will give you a full 1080p signal where as an upconversion dvd player will just take your standard dvd and make the quality of the picture a little better. You can watch regular dvds on a bluray player and it will act as an upconversions dvd player also. However, the upconverts in the bluray players are a lot better then a standard upconvert dvd player.

You can use a Component cable. HDMI is just a better connection because it requires less plugs.
Component=5 plugs
HDMI=1

Component can pass signal up to 1080i. 1080p will require HDMI.
If your TV can do the upconversion to 1080p - just send 480i signal to it via component, and let it upconvert for you to 1080p

It depends on the player, typically it is only HDMI.
