I would like your honest opinion if you have ever been that person that had bad breath or the person who had to tell someone about their breath. How did you address that person? Do you take your toothbrush and toothpaste and brush after lunch? Or do you just pop in some gum and call it a fresh day?

I am an etiquette instructor working on a personal hygiene module within my courses and just wanted your OPINION on how do YOU deal with people who have possible issues like bad breath. Your real life experiences would give me a broader view in preparing my material for class.

Every time and I mean EVERY TIME you see them you need to offer them a mint or some gum.
Believe it or not bad breath can actually be a medical reason aside from bad brushing habits. I wouldn't make a point to say hey "your breath stinks" because it might not be something they can control.
Just keep mints and gum handy!

I would probably first off saying that I am not trying to be rude and or embarass him/her but I do want to share that their breath isn't pleasant and that usually ppl don't notice themselves, that's why I felt I would share that with them. I wouldn't do it in front of anyone or where someone may be able to hear me. I may even wait until he/she is at their desk and shoot an email. I would appreciate if someone told me and if they took the time to care about how they said it would be even better. Ppl seem to avoid or ostrasize confrontation becuase they never have learned how to politely or even half tactfully handle a situation. Confrontation isn't a bad word and isn't always in negative content. I think ppl mix that up sometimes.

There are several products for a bad breathe co-worker. Why not leave a mini tooth brush and paste on their desk when he/she is not around. Or some gum or breathe fresheners. I use those mini finger brushes that have the tooth paste right on them and then you just throw them away. Gum works, but most often bad breathe can be attributed to having dry mouth so sometimes its just a matter of drinking water.

Definetly, this will be your chance: I would implement information on this issue, in my materials. Being very real, very clear information, how people needs to be aware of ANY body odors also, hygiene will be one of your # 1 priorities of concern. It's not elegant at all to have any kind of odors, from head to toe, hair, breath, underarms, etc, etc.
If they have any questions on these issues you'll be happy to come to them or they come to you to answer any questions.
I believe that she'll get the message, if not, then as you said it, "you'll be happy to come to them"..... trust me....OTHER people will be grateful to you. One adivice: whatever you say to your students, NEVER mentions it with anyone. It's not proffesional................

Toughen up and get over it. Possibly embarrassing your coworker isn't worth the slight misery you'll have of smelling their breath. There are worst things in the world...

You don't. There is no polite way to handle this. Try offering gum...often. Maybe he will get it.
