I rememeber the blackout in 1965 and 1977! In 65 I was studying for a history test and the lights went. My grandfather worked in NYC and was stuck in the elevator. My Mom had the only gas stove on our block so I was shuttling pans from the neighbors to our house to be cooked!
In 1977 the Son of Sam had everyone frightened and the heat was oppressive.
The blackout of 2003 was very frightening since all communication went dead. But it brought out the best in most people (unlike the one in 1977).
The city is so much nicer today.

Was it really 30 years ago today. I remember I was at my friends' house in Chelsea, which of course was not chic back then, and they had a little back yard and we were starting to cook dinner late, and you could see all the way uptown. The lights started to go off uptown and gradually worked their way downtown and we just sat their over the bbq, watching the lights going off as they came our way, it was the weirdest feeling. Then I remember I had to go home to the village and the buses were the only thing that was lit and I do remember that you could ride for free. And I lived in an old weird studio that I had so much trouble getting to as it was originally slave quarters for what was the front house, and there were stairs everywhere and I couldn't see anything. So, the next day it was so hot, I said the hell with it and a friend and I tried to drive out of the city, figuring I'd call in sick on Friday, and realized there were no traffic lights and no way to get gas. Boy were we glad to get to NJ and get gas and know we were on our way out of NYC and the mess and on our way to some a/c. But, in retrospect, I was younger and I guess it's all something to remember. At least I lived in a good area, no break-ins.

I do remember it. I was living in Lodi NJ at the time. I remember watching TV from Connecticut as the fringe area tv was coming in like channels 6 and 8 or 10 maybe I forgot. Hey it's 37 yrs now since that time. That was also the time of David Berkowitz son of sam. They called him the 44 calibre killer.

I was 9 years old, living in Queens (Astoria to be exact). I was home watching TV (Charlie's Angels) when the lights went out. As a 9-year old I wasn't really concerned. My parents simply told my sister and I to go to bed and that everything would be alright in the morning....and it was.
