I´ve just been doing this, transferring word documents
to Adobe.
I have Office Word 2003 and it offers this possibility, once you have the document open in the tool bar there is a title Adobe PDF, you open this and it says convert to Adobe PDF. That´s simple assuming you have this version of Word.

In Word, select page setup, then change your printer to Adobe PDF Writer or Adobe Distiller. Then print your document.
A window will display which allows you to choose the where to save your PDF document.
If those selections aren't visible, download and install the free Adobe viewer.
