First off we have never been the Roman Catholic Church, that is a name given us by the Church of England that has caught on and unfortunately many Catholics are guilty of using the name. Look in your phone directory and you will never see the title Roman Catholic it will always say ST.So and So's Catholic Church. There is not a single document that comes from the Vatican using the Title Roman Catholic. Before the great schism there was only the Catholic Church and after wards the Eastern Church which had separated took the name Orthodox which signifies the correct belief. So thus to this day after a thousand yrs the name Orthodox has meant different from the Catholic Church and they the Orthodox also like to use the title Roman Catholic as it is meant as a slap in the face type of insult. But the fact is both are true Churches and both have the same sacraments and Mass and Apostolic succession. But every day now they are ever so slowly becoming one again.

Actually it is highly unlikely that Jesus have said something like that.

For one there wasn't a Church yet, much less the Roman Catholic Church, & that church came about, of course, when the Gospel of Jesus came to Rome, a long time after Jesus have died and raised from the dead. (For we see Jesus didn't really travel that far away from his birthplace).

Anyway, Jesus did not come to establish a church, for the Church is actually the entire body of those who believe in Christ and his Gospel.

Each real believer is the church, the temple of the Holy Spirit who came down after Jesus was raised from the dead and went to heaven.

And the Protestant Reformation happened, of course, as a protest to religious practices in the time of Martin Luther--actually a protest to the religion that was made by men and not of God.

For God did not set up a religion, but rather he shown in probably the simplest way he can, how to live life--by following Jesus.

Well, this is an education for me as well. The verse says "upon this rock (Jesus is The Rock), I will build my church and the gates of hell..."

First, Peter is an apostle, not the Pope. I know this will be unpopular in here, but the Bible never implies that he is the Pope. This is a man made provision of a particular religion.

Second, gates are a defensive mechanism. What is being said here is that God will build his church (not any man), and that the methods of Satan will not stand in the way of what He promises to do.

That is a short answer and does not do the question justice, but I tried to summarize...

Siri- Martin Luther opposed the Catholic church for their teaching primarily around "justification by faith". The Catholic church taught and still teaches today that in order to gain entrance into heaven you have to "do" things. Martin Luther's argument was based on Romans 1:17 "the just shall live by faith", and Phillipians 2:8 and 9 "For by grace are you saved, through faith...not of works..."

Inspite of the Protestant ' reformation' and other heresies and schisms that have threatened the Roman Catholic Church, the RC Church still continues to exist and will continue to exist till the end of time. This fulfills Christ's words that the gates of hell would not prevail against His Church.

Martin Luther was a disgruntled ex-monk of the Catholic Church who left the Church and its laws of celibacy and married an ex-nun.

Jesus founded only one church, a universal church, which has always been identifiable in the world as one, holy, catholic, and apostolic.

If the church ever ceased to exist on the earth, even for a split second, than it could be rightly said that hell had indeed prevailed against it, and Jesus would then become a liar.

Since there was only one Christian church in existence for the first 1500 years of modern day history, the Catholic Church must be the that true church.

Protestants, heretics, and apostates not withstanding.

F.Y.I.

that is quite evident by your statement....Christ NEVER made such a statement...

I think what you are trying to refer to ...the gates of hell shall never prevail against the church , nor will one letter nor a tittle pass away of the word of God...

the reformation occurred ...Martin Luther nailed the 95 thesis to the door of the Whitteburg church....Bishops and other church officials were selling indulgences (buying salvation) ... keeping the Bible in Latin and with holding it from the common people, praying to statues and saints, etc..None of that is in the Bible..

Martin Luther and the protestant reformation... returning to the truth of the Bible in worship and faith,

goggle it and there is a very good movie on Martin Luther...

Hi, R.G.:

You've added to His Words a little. The Roman Catholic Church did not exist at Christ's time; in fact, Rome was just another church around the Mediterranean Sea that the disciples founded.

When Eusebius listed the bishops of the churches, He listed Linus as the first one, NOT PETER. Peter was just there long enough to get himself crucified.

Let us be honest now. In Acts 15, it describes church headquarters where Paul visits concerning circumcising the Gentiles.

Peter was there, but James seems to be the leader. In fact, there is a quote at www.revelado.org/romansys.htm that tells that Peter, James, and John refused leadership roles.

And Jerusalem remained church HQ with continuous Jewish bishops until after AD 120 when Hadrian banned the Jews from Jerusalem.

Let us be a little more specific: Rome was exalted by the "Greek" emperor Justinian around 536 A.D. and started military campaigns against everyone who would not convert to Catholicism. And those acts of MURDER is the reason Mohamed took those countries from Greek rule. Yes, Islam is described in Bible prophecy: THE RISE, DECLINE, AND DEATH OF ISLAM IN BIBLE PROPHECY at www.revelado.org/islam.htm

Blessings and AGAPE, Balaam

In the time of early christianity, it is doubtful that they referred to themselves as anything but christians. The term catholic referred originally to everyone- it means "universal". I guess he was saying that the gates of Hell would not prevail against the christian reformation of judaism, as Christ himself was still considered a Jew, and early christianity an offshoot of judaism. Many catholics and protestants like to point fingers at eachother, debating over who is going to heaven or hell, but the reality of it is that judgment belongs to God alone. The protestant Reformation happened because a group of catholic german monks led by Martin Luther (where we get Lutheranism) took issue with certain rules of the catholic church. It became popular in Germany, the Netherlands and in certain areas of France and eventually in England with King Henry the VIII, so he could get a divorce. England became protestant so the King could divorce his wife. Fault is immaterial, as I believe neither group, (catholics or protestants) have it right, but neither do I think either will suffer in Hell for it.

Jesus said that the gates of Hell would not prevail against HIS church. He didn't mention the romans or use the word catholic or universal as is the meaning of the word "catholic".

Matthew 16:18
And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

"it" is a "rock" and not Peter. God has always been called the Rock. The rock of ages. The church is built upon God the rock and not Peter the rock. Roman Catholic Church is not in the Bible.

There are 7 churches mentioned in Revelation and not one of these churches is called catholic or Peter.

Rock is (petra) Peter (Gr. Petros) Peter is not the foundation stone of the church. Christ the Rock is the foundation stone of the church. Peter means rock but he is not the exclusive foundation of the church - Christ is the Rock.
The gates of hell crucified Peter upside down.

2 Samuel 23:3
"The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God."

Deuteronomy 32:4
"He is the Rock, His work is perfect: for all His ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He."

Deut. 32:15
"But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered with fatness; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation."

1 Corinthians 10:4
"And did all drink the same spiritual drink; for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ."

The Papacy was getting materialistic and political. The Word of God was hidden to the average man and they only knew what the church taught. Confession was used against political leaders and the wealthy. Corrupt Popes just like corrupt preachers or pastors can bring a church down faster than anything.
