I brought this same thing up (in regards to inmates doing the work Americans don't want) in a question asked on Y!A... & I had so many negative answers stating that it wouldn't be safe for criminals to be trusted. Don't these people realize that they wouldn't put hardened criminals in a position like that; but criminals in minimum security will have an oportunity to learn a trade (maybe even in Horticulture). This is an excellent idea that Colorado has come up with. History shows that Colorado isn't the first state to use inmates to do hard labor that Americans won't consider doing. It also will cost less to have inmates to do the work. We don't need these illegals to do anything for us. Deport them all now!!!

That was a good idea to have prisoners do the labor in the fields of Colorado. I am sure they have tight security too. I will have to write my senators/representatives to take a close look at the idea Colorado has done to keep the farmer's businesses going. Plus, the prisoners would have to contribute to our state instead of them staying in the prisons all day long when our tax moneys are keeping them in there. They would have to hire more securities and have more trained dogs to keep an eye on them.

Isn't this the way it used to be when the prisoners were all chained up while working on the railroads? Or, was it just in movies?

Okay, that sounds like a great solution to the field labor and other low wage problems that are enabling the mass migratory folks. The jobs are being outsourced from right here in the US, wow, what a concept. Inmates actually work for less than the illegal people! Pretty funny that they finally HAD to come up to a solution to a long-standing problem because some citizens got fed up with the stupidity. Better yet, make those inmates pay restitution with that $4 an hour they get from the work.

Well, the republicans were in charge the last 6 years of every branch of government from the senate, to the house, and the president and they did NOTHING absolutely NOTHING to stop or slow down illegals coming into this country. Now that they are here, it's stupid to think the day will come when someone will just round them up and take them back. All those who voted the repubs into office the past few years now have to lay in the bed they made when it comes to illegals

Oh my god, farmers are willing to pay fair wages.

THere's something on Yahoo news, that in washington they fines a farm for fireing farm laborers and hiring legal Thai immigrants to work their farm. It sounds to me like a lie that there is a labor shortage of farm help. THe farmers want to lower the pay for their laborer and using illegal immigrants as a wedge.

9.60 an hour? hell forget the prisoners where do I sign up? (yeah I know the prisoners only get $4, but I don't need a guard.)

Anyway, that sounds like a good program, it rehabilitates the prisoners and let's them earn money for when they get out.

There is never going to be a shortage of workers,This is a great way to make the prisons self supporting. Have the prisoners working in the fields.Maybe build the fence, clean up the trash left by the illegals in the desert. There is no end to the possibilities. Will be sending my Sen=the idea thanks.
