I was raised Southern Baptist and to this day I can remember another kid picking up a frog and slamming it down on the rocks killing it for no reason other than his own amusement. This was in Sunday School! And it's just one example of the same children I saw in Church on Sunday being cruel and nasty to me during the week in regular school.
I've also seen so many examples of privileged hypocrites being cruel and callous inside and outside of Church.
All of that helped make me into the atheist I am today.

It would only do so if the atheist friends were intent on deconverting the person (that's the term I've seen some atheists use, anyway). Just as atheists don't like for Christians to have a hidden agenda of conversion, so Christians wouldn't want an atheist friend to have that as an agenda. If both friends care about the friendship instead of changing each other, I can't see a problem.

Well I'm an atheist, that's for sure...
Anyway, I do feel let down by Christians some times, but not for what they do to me, oh no. I live in a pretty nice neighborhood and have never heard anyone discriminate based on religion around here. But, some Christians let me down on an intellectual level. I have seen too many Christians who blindly go to church, happy to have a crutch, or "god" to lean on. They don't care about truth because they can't imagine living on their own. I am by no means saying all Christians are this way, not by far. Even many atheists seem to let me down by the way THEY treat religion. It is a general lack of knowledge by anyone that saddens me...
Oh and people who blame God, or always say "well if God was real, he wouldn't let this happen" bother me the most. So I'm glad you've grown out of those rebellious teenage years we all go through.

Wow. I have been making a concentrated effort to walk more Christ-like. I have been hurt by so many Christians, I was beginning to not believe, but the Lord always stepped in and showed me He is God and Christians are forgiven people who make many mistakes just as the Israelites and early Christians did all thru the Bible. I am sure I have left some scars in someone somewhere and for that I AM truly sorry.

No, I never blamed god, for the problems in my life. I didn't rebel against god out of anger. I admit I had an eye opener, that shook up my beliefs, but nothing like what you described.
I'm glad you're a christian that doesn't hate atheists. To many others here love to suggest how killing us would only profit the world. I don't hate you or christians either. I'm just here to help them see reason.

First off, you couldn't be a nonbeliever and blame God for your hardships at the same time.
Secondly, Christianity isn't the only religion in the world and are not the only representatives of theism. Mean Christians don't make someone not believe in Hinduism or any other theistic belief system.
What makes someone an atheist is questioning all of these stories and realizing that they don't provide any meaningful explanation for reality as we see it.

I would say disappointed. Disappointed that some use Christianity for the wrong reasons by forcing their beliefs onto other people.
As the first poster stated, most do not even know or refuse to acknowledge how violent their religion has been.

I appreciate your honesty, but I'm an atheist because I just can't believe what the christian religion, or any religion for that matter, claims... that we are "created" by a supernatural being that lives in some spirit dimension, yet cares for his creation, but not too much, lest he give himself away... He requires submission to his will, yet he already knows if you will submit or not because he knows everything. Not to mention that I believe science answers the questions that religion "answered" for our ancient ancestors.
I can go on, but I don't want to come off as a jerk. I just really don't believe it.

So you say you were a non believer, but blamed god? That means you WERE in fact a believer. You didn't change, just your surroundings did. I don't feel let down by christians, any more than any other people.

As an Atheist, I have to admit that many Christians haven't shown me the Jesus-like love that I expect from them. I've been expecting apologies, but none have come. I shed a tear for many reasons.
