1. Fill the 3 gallon jug.
2. Pour into 5 gallon jug.
3. Fill the 3 gallon jug again.
4. Pour again into the 5 gallon jug (until it is full)
Your remaining amount is 1 gallon in your 3 gallon jug (as you have just transferred 2 gallons).
5. Empty the 5 gallon jug.
6. Pour the (1 gallon of water) 3 gallon jug into the 5 gallon jug.
7. Fill the 3 gallon jug again.
8. Pour into the 5 gallon jug.
You're done.
5-3-3=-1 (1 gallon excess)
1+3 = 4

Yeah - it was in Die Hard With A Vengeance. :)
Fill the 3-gallon jug. Pour into 5 gallon. 5 gallon now has 3 in it. Fill the 3 gallon again. Pour into 5 gallon until 5 gallon is full (2 gallons) leaving 1 gallon in the 3 gallon jug. Dump 5 gallon jug. Pour remaining 1 gallon into 5 gallon jug. Fill 3 gallon jug, pour into 5 gallon jug.
And this is in Religion why??

Fill the 3 and pour into the 5, mark how much, fill the 5 and pour into the 3 just down to the mark this will be 2 gal in the 3 gal jug;
Mark the 2 gal spot and fill to that spot and empty into the 5 gal jug twice.

Fill the 5, and pour off 3 into the 3, leaving 2 in the 5.
Empty the 3, pour the 2 from the 5 into the 3.
Fill the 5. From this, fill the 3 (which had 2), leaving 4 in the 5.

I have a migraine today so I'm sorry to disappoint you, this requires too much thinking on my part. I would just fill the 5-gallon jug 4/5 full and leave it at that.

Easy: You fill up the 3-gallon bucket and pour it into the 5-gallon bucket. Then you fill up the 3-gallon bucket again and fill up the 5-gallon bucket. You will have one gallon left in the 3-gallon bucket. Empty the 5-gallon bucket, and pour the one gallon of water into the 5-gallon bucket. Then fill up the 3-gallon bucket and dump in into the 5-gallon bucket and you will have four gallons.

Well...shucks...why are you only getting four gallons of water when you have enough for eight? I don't think you've delved into the why of your predicament enough. Does a raccoon have a gun to your head? Is this some kind of fraternity hazing? Using the word "jug" anymore just makes it sound like you're talking about breasts.
