if he's just old and not in any pain...let him be...make him super happy for the not so much time he has left. if he's in pain...then we all know what we should do.

Even if the dog has been placed in your care, you will need the owner's permission to euthanize the dog. If they agree, you can go ahead, if not, what are the alternatives?
If he hasn't much longer anyway, why not just make him as comfortable as possible until it happens? The Vet should be able to advise you on how to do that.
If you were not prepared to take on the extra responsibility, then you shouldn't have agreed to take on an older animal.

Imagine yourself older, needing care. Now do for the dog what you would like done for you. He certainly needs more attention if he is near the end of his life, but don't push it. You will either have to live/ or / get to live, with how you treated a creature in need of care. It could be a very rewarding experience for you. You'll think of this as you near the end of your life. Will you be proud of yourself?

Take him to the vet. They know whats best. My dog is a 17 yr old keeshound, and she was supposed to be put down a while ago, but we found a great medicine form our vet, called Rimadel, it was for her arthiritis and shes still here now! So there may be a medication for him, but thats up to your vet to find out.

If he were my dog, vs. in my care, the decision is different.
If he can eat and go for a walk and wag his tail, his quality of life may be OK. If he eats and wags his tail... it is iffy.
If he stops eating or if he won't wag his tail anymore, then the decision is up to you... Talk to the Vet at that point.
(Sometimes some pain meds will get the tail wagging, and may get him eating again...)

where is the owner of this dog? are you in contact? the best thing to do in this situation is to talk to the owner, if you can, and let them make the decision. they may want to do this themselves (if they're decent people they should). if you can't reach them, and the dog is suffering, then I would say the decision is up to you, and that you should be the one to take him. I'm sorry that anyone would leave you in such a terrible position.

Can you reach the owner? I think the kindest thing to do is have him put to sleep.
